All parents have the best intentions for their children when trying to help them, but sometimes we make mistakes. These mistakes are usually the result of a lack of understanding of the child ?s real needs. Let ?s face it, children do not come with an instructions manual!

We start today a series of articles with advise on how to contribute to the child ?s creative process according to the needs of each developmental stage. Let ?s address the Scribbling stage, the first self-initiated encounter with art that begins around one and a half years of age. Like every other stage, this one is important for the mental development of the child.

During scribbling, children move the crayon or marker on the surface of the page for no other reason than the pure pleasure of the movement and making marks. Initially children scribble in a random manner. When the child discovers there is a relationship between the movements and the marks he is making, he also discovers he can control the kind of marks he makes. He starts experimenting with the movements that give him particular pleasure. As perception and motor skills develop, circles and other geometric figures start to appear next to the straighter lines. Eventually the child starts naming his scribbles through imaginative play while he draws. The child may announce what he will draw or give the drawing a name once he is done. He may also change the name of the same drawing several times.

What should we avoid during this stage?

In the first place, we should not ask the child to draw something in particular, for he does not understand the representational meaning of drawing. A circle can be many things for a child, some of them not circular in nature at all. Besides, during most of this stage, the child doesn ?t even feel the need to name his drawings and is focused on mastering the control of his movements. This process should not be interrupted or skipped.

In the second place, adults should not draw for the child or model. In this case there is a high risk that the child ?s exploration an imaginative play will be interrupted when the child starts imitating the adult drawing, without really knowing what he is doing. The process of free exploration is replaced by a senseless repletion of what the adult has drawn.

The role of the adults

Make adequate materials available: markers, crayons, ball point pens, pencils and thick tempera paint that will not drip. Brushes must be thick and the sheets of paper at least 12”x18”. Colors must be few and offer contrast. The child should work on a horizontal surface. When we talk with the scribbler about the drawing we can start with commenting about the variety of movements and marks. Once he starts naming his scribbles, use these meanings for dialogue, encouraging him to verbalize details, thoughts, feelings and experiences. This is the best kind of praise you can give your child.
