Maybe the addiction to smart phones is the most common bad habit of teens and young people today, they spend long hours in social networks, playing, watching videos or simply browsing through some new application (app).

And it was precisely this curiosity what drove the young Alejandrina Gonzalez Reyes to go further. “I was always curious about how apps worked in cellular phones. I wanted to know how, what was behind the screen, really worked, so one day I decided to start learning how to create an application, this was something that I thought will be impossible”

But Alejandrina realized it was not impossible. She managed to make not only one app, but six, each of which are available in the Apple Store. The most impressive is that she also learned to program on her own, because she never took any classes about programming, so she turned herself into a self-trained web/app designer.

AND, WHO IS ALEJANDRINA?

1462152414500Alejandrina Gonzalez is only 18 years old, she arrived to the United States six years ago, with her parents and brother from her hometown Toluca, in Mexico. Since her arrival she has been a resident of Doral and as of now she is a Senior in High School with an excellent GPA.

Alejandrina seems like a shy, introverted girl, but when she explains how she created each one of her apps, she transforms herself into a little genius that transmits admiration and respect, it is surprising to see her dedication and passion when she speaks about the design of her apps and the way in which she conceived each one of them.

“I love each one of my apps, they go from games, to educational tools and also religious. It is very gratifying to conceive an idea and develop it until you have finally an app ready and working for other people to use it”, comments Alejandrina.

No one could imagine that a young web developer, that is still studying High School had time to do anything else but Alejandrina is very versatile, she speaks English, Spanish, has some knowledge of German, she runs, swims, drives bicycle and she also plays the piano. “In my house there is a piano and when I have time I love to play it and compose music”, she told us.

Alejandrina’s work has been recognized in the United States, especially by the National Center for Women & Information Technology, a non for profit organization that is dedicated to encourage the participation of girls and women in Computer Science. Her importance has been such that she has received several distinguished comments in communication media as USA Today, ABC 7 News, Florida Catholic, Univision, Apple 5×1, Mexico Network and CNET, all of which have interviewed her.

When she speaks about how she started designing her applications, Alejandrina states that she combined her ideas with the available web tools. “It was very difficult because nobody in my family knew how this worked and I had no knowledge on mobile applications or programming, so everything ended being trial and error”.

In 2015, Alejandrina participated in the Apple Developers Conference, Apple is one of her favorite companies and there she was able to meet its Executive Director, Tim Cook, with whom she discussed her application.

From the six apps that she has now, her preferred one is “YoRezo” (“I Pray”), a small app with prayers that can be downloaded from the Apple Store for free and has hundreds of downloads on a daily basis, even when it has been available for only approximately 5 months.

Alejandrina’s career in web development started with two apps that were launched on 2014: “Color5”, a game based on the use of colors and “Flappy Space”, a didactic game in which you collect starts in order to get points. 2015 was a very successful year, the young entrepreneur designed “Bozeman Science” an educational app for Middle Schoolers that is being used around the world; “Yo Rezo” ( “I Pray”), an app in Spanish with religious content that has hundreds of downloads per day; “B&R”, a minimalist game used to develop the ability to focus and “Ipray”, an app in English in the religious area that is being used in all Catholic schools in South Florida.

In the few months of 2016, Alejandrina has already developed her first app of the year: “Air for All”, based in the research of the quality of air and its pollution, this is an improved version of the research application “Air 4U”. “Right now I am working on my seventh app and I have plans to develop a Social Network”, states Alejandrina, who also comment that as of now she has no plans to program for Android.

Among the recognitions that evidence the quality of Alejandrina’s work are: “Miami Herald Silver Knight” (2016), “NCWIT South Florida Aspirations in Computing” (2016), “NCWIT National Aspirations in Computing” (2016), “Congressional App Challenge 2015 FL25”, “Congressional Achievement in Coding Excellence” and “Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference 2015”.

Two weeks ago, Alejandrina also participated in the WECode 2016 “Women Engineers Code”, the most important conference in the United States for women studying Computer Science, this conference takes place in February at the University of Harvard and its goal is to increase technological knowledge and to share innovative ideas.

As expected, Alejandrina has her College future already figured out, she is already evaluating options among the universities that offer Computer Science, these include Stanford, the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and University of California, Berkeley.

“I believe that the development of apps is one of the best professions. It is the profession of the future because it will continue growing. One day I hope I can create one of the best apps for iOS and in the meantime I will continue studying and getting trained because I still have too much to learn”, states the exemplary Alejandrina Gonzalez.
