Be Brave

I wonder what would happen if
You say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I want to see you be brave

Kendall Regional Medical Center announced in September, the release of their first pediatric music video. The video, created by Kendall Regional Medical Center´s Pediatric Advisory Council, was made possible with the collaboration of   patients, their families, staff and volunteers.

Everyone, at some point in our lives, has faced the situation of having to be hospitalized. For an adult, this can be a difficult situation, and much more so for a child. But, as the song by Sara Bareilles used in the video says, “I want to see you be brave”, because in the end, there is no better choice.

The emotional video, edited and directed by Fiona Campbell of the Pediatric Advisory Council, features the children singing and dancing the song of Sara Bareilles, nurses dressed as ballerinas playing with children and young patients holding posters with the words Happy, Friend, Brave, Love, Caring throughout the video. You can see hospital staff, having fun playing as superheroes.

The best thing about this video “was working with all of the children and watching them have fun while I do what I love doing” said Fiona Campbell, who directed, edited & sang in the video. Fiona has created music videos with children since she was in Elementary School and she is the winner of the 2013 Miami Dade County “Young Talent Big Dreams”.

In a statement issued by Kendall Regional Medical Center for the launch the video, Carolina Mallar, President of the Kendall Regional Medical Center´s Pediatric Advisory Council said: “The young members of this advisory council aim to assist hospital staff and administration by providing a child’s point of view related to healthcare”.

According to a report published in May in “Pediatrics”, the official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics regarding playing in the field of hospital states that “Play in the health care setting is adapted to address unique needs based on developmental level, self-directed interests, medical condition and physical abilities, psychosocial vulnerabilities, and setting (i.e., bedside, playroom, clinic). Play as a therapeutic modality, including health care play or “medical play,” has been found to reduce children’s emotional distress and help them cope with medical experiences”.

“At Kendall Regional Medical Center, the kids are always in charge,” can be read on the pediatrics section of the Center’s website. The hospital works with children and teenagers in the community to provide advice and guide them about the tastes of children, from the choice of food to which video games to choose.

Kendall Regional Medical Center offers a wide range of services in pediatrics. It has a Pediatric Unit for Inpatients, which focuses on providing medical care for children. It is designed with facilities including cable TV, DVD players and game rooms with video games, dining room and treatment rooms.  Be Brave
