Life, Achievements and Successes

Bettina Rodriguez is a multifaceted and courageous woman who has taken advantage of every circumstance in her life to learn, grow and share her knowledge. Cuban-born but with much European influence, Bettina came to America very young, with her brother and her mother, whom she considers “a blessing, her greatest inspiration, and an example of courage” who had to leave her husband as a political prisoner in Cuba for nearly two decades.

In a candid, honest and spontaneous conversation, Bettina tells how the meaning of helping was the spark that promoted innovative ideas in her as a child. Because of economic circumstances in her family, she began working at the age of 13 and thereafter, this shy but both positive and intelligent young lady realized that, with her courageous willingness she could go far. She graduated from high school very young and participated in radio and television shows to share with others her example of tenacity. From those life experiences and using her bilingual skills, at age 17 she started selling frames and because of the great success of it, she was able to establish her own frame company in South Florida. Thanks to that hard work, she could pay for her studies obtaining two degrees at Miami Dade College and Florida International University. “Those days impacted my life incredibly. It was then when I realized that we can achieve everything we want in life,” she recalls with nostalgia when talking about her beginnings.

Bettina began her career in Miami-Dade County where she held various positions in different departments. For 17 years she guided entrepreneurs on how to benefit from public programs and start their businesses. She also assisted many others mentoring and training them. Bettina then decided to switch and gain ground again in the world of private business with a slogan in mind: “giving back to the community”. Thus, shortly after she created a nonprofit organization offering talks and financial advice assisting the start up of over 600 small businesses. Because of her successful expertise, she was invited to take the role of National Human Rights Coordinator leading initiatives and programs in different countries with outstanding results. Because of her intense community service, her professionalism and her involvement in human rights, she has earned many prestigious awards.

She also served in the City of Doral as the Economic Development Coordinator for four years working hard on business strategies and growth plans for the business park of the city.

Ups and downs, family roots and passion for making changes

This whole story is said fast and behind the scenes, details speak of an energetic, spiritual and passionate woman. The road has not been easy; her success has meant hard work, sacrifices, perseverance, ups and downs and courage to take risks. Bettina has held various roles without forgetting her family roots which she considers her most treasured possession and center of her life. With much excitement and love, Bettina speaks proudly about the way she has raised her two children without material wealth but riches of life and spirit: “From very young, my kids have been with me and have been involved in everything. They have participated in forums, events, had visited shelters… They have seen first hand that what I’ve done is not for money but for my passion for making changes”.

The influence of Bettina’s mother was also crucial for her to feel this passion: “My mother was always a very important pillar for me. The way she lived her life taught me courage, honesty, commitment, consistency, perseverance and believing in oneself,” she adds. It is precisely the death of her mother that impacted Bettina so deeply that she decided to take some time off and dedicate that to inner reflection, which made her gain strength and continue with great momentum in her public service demonstrating the same love and dedication that she always saw from her mom.

Attract, Retain and Expand

“Attracting, retaining and expanding businesses” in Doral has been a priority for Bettina. As she describes about her former role as Economic Developer in the City: “One of the first things I decided to work on was to change the concept that Doral was only good for export and import companies, logistics and golf. I’ve always wanted people to see Doral as the perfect place for excellence, variety, shops, restaurants, art and culture… in summary: a place to live with high quality. By doing so we can attract and welcome new businesses, retain what we have by expanding, strengthening and supporting them to grow. “

In this direction, Bettina has contributed to the uptake of 30 chambers of commerce in the city which are the center of events to attract attention, business and investment. She implemented the first commercial city census and created the Community and Business Guide, a handbook for new businesses; she fought for the creation of the “Design District” and developed the program “Spend Local, Stay Local”.

Bettina is very firm on continuing her legacy in the city now at a higher level as a candidate for the Council: “I have shown my commitment and passion for Doral. I fought and lived for quality service. I was not afraid to leave my job in the city because I trust that the community will recognize my work. I’m trained and I have much expertise which is what we need now.” She is determined to live her life as the slogan says that hangs on her front door “Courageous women make history”.
