Christi Fraga: A Daughter for the City.

Christi Fraga speaks fluent Spanish. Her grandparents got her used to it, and she can go back and forth between both languages, giving the conversation a very comfortable pace, and definitely the typical flavor of Doral youth, that segment of the population that she very properly represents in the new City of Doral Council. “I think the voters saw me as someone that can be here for a longer time, learning from the best to carry our city for the next generation”.
The youngest member of the City of Doral Council, she is a 26 year old enthusiast entrepreneur who was elected with 55% of votes in the runoff election, prevailing in the polls over the experience of previous Vice Mayor Robert Van Name and the achievements of Community Activist Bibiana Salmon who lost in the first round. Fraga speaks with great admiration and appreciation about both of them: “I respect them tremendously. We have a lot in common that we would love to see in this community, a lot of the same vision.”
Fraga’s smile and energy are contagious. She is extremely organized and structured, and credits that to her education in finances and business that makes her greatly appreciate organization, planning and accountability. She also has a soft side, being extremely sympathetic and emotional to the needs of those around her. ”My happy is seeing other people happy; the greatest gift I can give someone is a smile.”
She is determined to work hard and live up to the expectations of the voters that gave her the chance of serving the city that has grown up along with her. Her commitment is evident and upon being elected she got down to work right away. She felt right at home on her new office at City Hall and was warmly welcomed by the staff: “People are very nice. They have all being helpful with me. It is always difficult when there is new people, everybody is wondering what is going to happen next but I think it is going to be a smooth transition. We are all excited to get to work.”
She is excited of working on an All-Councilwomen team with the leadership of Mayor Boria, as for her it is an opportunity for women to bring new dynamics to the city government. “To me as a young woman it is so enlightening, so wonderful to see. I can only imagine what will come later for other women, for new generations. It is great. I think we are going to work well. Women, we rationalize much better at times than men. We think very different in a sense, because we worry about our neighbors, elders, children, business, education. I am excited to see how it is going to unroll. We have a lot of powerful women in one room and it might at times get difficult; it is going to be very interesting. Luigi knows how to handle women; I have known him for many, many years. I grew up in their house and went to school with his daughter. So he is always been nothing but respectful and I think he will be able to keep us united and control the emotions. You have to be able to keep your emotions aside at some point and think what is best for the city.”
The ordeal of the campaign and becoming a Role Model
It was a hard campaign for Christi. There were people really hostile and rude; there were times when it was stressful and tiring, but it did not demotivate her. The fuel that kept her going was realizing how much impact she can be on many people lives and finding out many young people in the city already saw her as a role model, just by the fact that she was running for public service.
“I know there is going to be population that does not agree with me or not like what I do, but I can promise the community and the voters that I will make the best decisions possible. I ask them to pray for me that the decisions I make have a good outcome. It is not about my decision but about the journey that it takes upon. I hope that the voters stay behind me and pray for the decisions that we make. And if they don’t believe in praying, meditate about it, send good energy for us. My motivation is this community, the people behind me”.
“I want to be a role model to the youth in the community. I want to be not only a councilwoman but your sister, daughter, friend; your ‘nieta’ (granddaughter). That people see me close to them. I want children to think ‘I can do it because Christi did it’. Christi is obtainable. I am a 26 year old woman that worked really hard, went to school and did what I wanted to do. I was very normal in the sense that I did what I needed to do to get where I wanted to be. It is very hard for young people to find a role model like that. There are many role models that are unobtainable, some dreams that are unobtainable because they are not the right dreams to follow. I hope that I can be a role model for the youth in Doral, and anyone that might need guidance that I can help with, my doors will always be open.”
When asked about having a political role model, Christi said: “I can’t say I have one, because there is nobody that I actually have followed their career to a certain point that I want to be that way. Marco Rubio is definitely a great politician, Latin, young man. Also Hillary Clinton is amazing, she was the wife of the president, but she is an amazing woman role model. Strong, dealt with a lot. Some people might not like that, but I think she would make a great president. And I am not a democrat or republican either, I am independent, I vote for the person, but I think she would make a great president.”
Words into action: her first proposition to the Council
The first project Fraga is going to pursue as Councilwoman is the creation of the Youth Advisory Board (YAB) for the City of Doral. This team she defines as “a group of youth in the community, from 16 to 20, that want to make a difference, to get other young adults involved. That would not only look great on college applications because it shows responsibility and a sense of government, but we are going to actually take their advice, receive their input on policy making. It is really important because this is their future, this is their home”. For Fraga creating YAB will give young people in Doral the sense of involvement needed to prepare a new generation of leaders for the city that understand government and care enough to give their time and effort to public service. Just like her.
”I believe that I am setting the path for new leaders. As a young, Latina woman, I am opening the door for those coming behind me. It takes hard work, dedication. I am not going to tell you I didn’t sweat or cry, wondered what I was doing, but it made me a better person. I know I will grow much more but today I am not the same person that before the campaign. Win or lose I always said it was a win for me. It was always a great experience and I think YAB is going to be a great addition to the City. I know we have a ton of advisory boards, but this is one that will make a big impact on our schools and the city. These kids could be a really strong voice in our community. The Mayor appoints our boards therefore those interested would need to apply and will be chosen by the Council. They will need recommendation letters; it is going to be like a job interview for them”.
Her words of appreciation for Doral former leaders
“The previous councilmembers, they did a wonderful job creating our city. I do believe it was teamwork. I think JC Bermudez did an amazing job. He is a man of integrity and I have heard great things about him. I did not get to work with him but I thank him for the dedication that he gave to our city, and the same goes to all the other councilmembers, because they all had to sacrifice something to be here. It was teamwork and they got us here”.
“I thank each and every one of them for any input that they put into this city, because we are what we are today because of them and because of our staff and our administration. They will always be staple items in our city because they were the first council and second council. I have nothing but great things to say about all of them, they have been very helpful with me”.
Her commitment to support activities in Doral Public Schools
One of the first activities Christi Fraga pursued upon deciding to run for office was getting well acquainted of the schools in Doral. Nonetheless, that young people and her parents is the population she wants to represent in the City Council. Now, she has become a well-known face in Ronald W.Reagan/Doral Senior High School, where she constantly attends PTSA meetings, functions and events. She wants to be able to speak of what she has seen at the school and help the community address issues timely, knowing first-hand the real magnitude and impact they might have.
“I had volunteers from the schools. I think that doing more events with the kids, for them to be involved, those are great things to motivate young adults to get involved, make it cool. Young adults want to be accepted, which is why you see groups. The ones that are rejected are the ones that get in trouble. There is always going to be a handful. We have to find a place for everyone and parental involvement should be the priority. I want to make sure, that is my goal, that there is always a safe environment for the youth in Doral. I am one vote but I am more than willing to support the PTSAs on many initiatives that would need the support from the City. I am excited and want to be a voice for the youth, the kids and the parents of the city.”
Grateful and honored by the opportunity to serve
“I am forever grateful, honored and humbled by the trust people have put in me. I won’t let you down. You not only earned a councilmember but a friend, a sister, a daughter for everyone in the city. Everything I can offer myself to be. I will always be available because I do everything with an open heart and people have given me a huge opportunity”.
“To those that did not support me, I am your councilmember as well. I will show you what I can do. We are all neighbors, my door is open, and I want to hear from them. I hope a second time around they support me without a question.”
Although “you never know where life leads you”, Christi Fraga looks forward to having a career in public service. “Maybe in the future there will be other things I would love to pursue, but I don’t rush into anything. I want to learn what I don’t know, get what I do know and pass it on to the future, for the next generation. I hope to be a mentor, to be able to be a guide in the future for someone else”.
“I don’t like being called the Doral Princess like someone told me once, it is conceited. I prefer to be considered a Doral Daughter. I want to be serving the community in the long term in the future if the community wants me to continue here”.
Christi Fraga: Una Hija para la Ciudad

Christi Fraga habla muy correcto y fluido el español. Así la acostumbraron sus abuelos. Conversar con ella tiene el ritmo y acento de los típicos jóvenes de Doral, que van de un idioma al otro cómodamente. Eso la hace representar con mucha gracia y propiedad a un importante segmento de la población en el nuevo Concejo Municipal de la Ciudad. “Pienso que los votantes vieron en mi alguien que podría trabajar representándolos por mucho tiempo, aprendiendo de los mejores y ayudando a nuestra ciudad a evolucionar para la siguiente generación.”
La miembro más joven del Concejo, Fraga es una entusiasta empresaria de 26 años de edad, quien fue electa en la segunda vuelta con el 55% de los votos, superando en las urnas la experiencia previa del ExVice-Alcalde Robert Van Name y los logros de la Activista Comunitaria Bibiana Salmon quien había quedado atrás en la primera vuelta. Fraga habla con mucho aprecio y admiración sobre ambos contendientes: “Los respeto tremendamente. Tengo muchas ideas en común con ambos que quisiera ver materializadas en la comunidad. En muchos aspectos tenemos la misma visión.”
La sonrisa y energía de Fraga son contagiosas. Es extremadamente organizada y estructurada, característica que atribuye a su educación en negocios y finanzas, que la hacen apreciar el orden, la planificación y la responsabilidad. También tiene su lado sensible, pues es muy empática con las necesidades de quienes le rodean “soy feliz viendo a los demás felices; el mejor regalo que puedo dar a alguien es una sonrisa.”
Determinada a trabajar duro, tiene todo el deseo de llenar las expectativas de los votantes que le dieron el chance de servir en la administración de la ciudad que ha crecido junto con ella. Su dedicación y compromiso son evidentes y apenas se obtuvieron los resultados finales de la elección inició sus actividades. Recibida con calidez y alegría por el personal de la Alcaldía, ya está completamente instalada en su oficina. “El personal ha sido muy amable y me han ayudado mucho. Siempre es difícil adaptarse a nuevas personas y muchos se preguntan qué depara el futuro, pero yo pienso que la transición será fluida pues todos estamos muy deseosos de comenzar a trabajar”.
Christi está muy emocionada de trabajar en un Concejo mayoritariamente femenino con el liderazgo del Alcalde Boria, pues para ella es una oportunidad para que las mujeres traigan una nueva dinámica al gobierno municipal. “Para mí, como mujer joven y emprendedora, es una situación muy propicia, es una maravilla esta oportunidad. Solo puedo imaginar lo que esto implica para el futuro de muchas otras mujeres en las próximas generaciones. Creo que trabajaremos muy bien. Hay momentos en que las mujeres razonamos mejor que los hombres porque nos fijamos en detalles, pensamos diferente, consideramos el impacto y nos preocupamos por muchos aspectos. Estoy muy emocionada de ver cómo van a desarrollarse nuestras sesiones de trabajo. Tener tantas mujeres de carácter juntas va a ser interesante y no dudo que tenga sus momentos difíciles. Luigi sabe cómo trabajar con mujeres. Lo conozco hace muchos años, crecí en su casa pues estudié con su hija en la escuela. Es un hombre muy respetuoso y estoy segura que nos mantendrá unidas y nos ayudará a controlar emociones. En estas actividades uno tiene que controlar sus emociones y siempre pensar en lo que sea más beneficioso para la ciudad”.
La contienda de la campaña y convertirse en modelo de conducta
Fue una campaña dura para Christi Fraga. Hubo personas realmente groseras y hostiles; también hubo momentos muy desgastantes y agotadores. Pero nada pudo desmotivarla. La energía que le mantuvo fue tener consciencia del gran impacto que podía tener en muchas vidas y darse cuenta que, solo por haberse atrevido a ser candidata a un puesto de servicio público, muchos jóvenes de la ciudad la consideraban un modelo de conducta a seguir.
“Siempre estuve consciente que habrá parte de los ciudadanos que no estarán de acuerdo conmigo o a quienes no le guste lo que yo haga, pero puedo prometer a la comunidad y a los votantes que siempre tomaré las mejores decisiones posibles. Les pido que recen por mí, por nosotros, para que las decisiones que tomemos siempre tengan las mejores consecuencias para toda la población. Espero que los ciudadanos nos respalden y apoyen. Mi motivación es la comunidad y los ciudadanos que represento”.
“Quiero ser un modelo de conducta para la juventud de la comunidad. No quiero ser solo una Concejal, sino que me sientan cercana, como una hermana, una amiga, una hija. Deseo que los niños piensen ‘yo puedo hacerlo porque Christi pudo’. Hacer lo que Christi hace es posible. Soy una mujer de 26 años que ha trabajado duro, que me he esforzado y he estudiado para lograr lo que he querido hacer. Siempre he sido una persona normal, haciendo lo necesario para lograr mis sueños. Hay muchos modelos que los jóvenes siguen que no son alcanzables, muchos sueños que no se alcanzan porque no son los correctos. Espero ser modelo para la juventud de Doral y que cualquiera que necesite consejo, apoyo o guía vea en mi alguien a quien acudir.”
Con respecto a un modelo político cuyo ejemplo sea importante para ella, Christi comenta: “no puedo decir que tenga alguno, pues no he seguido tan de cerca sus carreras para afirmarlo de esa manera. Sin embargo por ejemplo Marco Rubio es un gran político, joven y latino. También Hillary Clinton es increíble, un excelente modelo de mujer ejecutiva y política. Es una persona fuerte que ha trabajado mucho. Algunos podrán discrepar conmigo en esto, pero creo que ella sería una gran presidente; yo no soy demócrata ni republicana, soy independiente y voto por la persona, por eso pienso que ella sería fantástica en la Presidencia.”
Palabras convertidas en acciones: su primera propuesta al Concejo Municipal
El primer proyecto que Fraga propone como Concejal de Doral es la creación del Comité Juvenil de la ciudad (Youth Advisory Board -YAB). Lo define como “un grupo de jóvenes seleccionados de la comunidad, con edades entre 16 y 20 años, que deseen hacer una diferencia y ayudar al resto de la juventud a incorporarse a la actividad de la ciudad. Una actividad como esa no solamente se va a ver excelente en las aplicaciones universitarias de esos jóvenes sino que también demuestra que tienen responsabilidad y sentido de la importancia del gobierno. Como Concejo tomaremos en cuenta realmente sus recomendaciones a la hora de administrar ordenanzas y desarrollar políticas para la ciudad. Es muy importante que haya jóvenes comprometidos, porque este es su futuro, esta es su casa.” Para Fraga, YAB permitirá a los jóvenes de Doral comenzar a involucrarse en la administración de la ciudad y comenzar a preparar la nueva generación de líderes que comprendan el gobierno municipal y tengan la responsabilidad social de comprometer su tiempo y esfuerzo para el servicio público. Es exactamente lo que Christi Fraga ha hecho.
“Creo firmemente que estoy allanando el camino para los nuevos líderes. Siendo una mujer joven y latina, estoy abriendo la puerta para los que vengan detrás de mí. Hace falta mucha dedicación y trabajo; no voy a decir que ha sido fácil. Yo no soy la misma persona que era antes de la campaña. Siempre pensé que ganara o perdiera, este proceso sería un gran aprendizaje para mí. Considero que YAB constituirá un gran éxito para la Ciudad. Sé que tenemos muchos comités, pero el impacto que este tendrá es inmenso para las escuelas y la juventud de la ciudad. Estos jóvenes van a ser una voz importante para la población. El Alcalde selecciona los comités, por lo tanto aquellos interesados van a tener que aplicar y serán seleccionados por el Concejo. Necesitarán cartas de recomendación, va a ser como una entrevista de trabajo para esos jóvenes.”
Sus palabras de aprecio para los líderes anteriores de Doral
“Los Concejales anteriores hicieron un trabajo extraordinario para crear nuestra ciudad. Trabajaron en equipo y el Alcalde J.C. Bermúdez hizo un trabajo estupendo. Es un hombre íntegro y solamente he escuchado comentarios excelentes sobre él. No tuve la oportunidad de trabajar juntos, pero le agradezco su dedicación a nuestra ciudad. Igualmente agradezco a todos los Concejales que me precedieron, porque todos tuvieron que hacer sus sacrificios para que la ciudad sea lo que es hoy.”
“A todos y cada uno les agradezco su aporte, porque tenemos esta gran ciudad hoy gracias a su trabajo y al apoyo del personal y administración de la Alcaldía. Siempre serán parte de las bases de la ciudad, pues fueron el primero y segundo equipo del Concejo municipal y todos me han ayudado mucho.”
Comprometida con apoyar las actividades de las Escuelas Públicas de Doral
Una de las primeras actividades realizadas por Christi Fraga cuando decidió participar en la campaña electoral fue empaparse de las actividades y necesidades de las escuelas de Doral, pues es esa población joven y sus padres a quienes ella quiere representar activamente en el Concejo Municipal.
Hoy en día Christi Fraga es una cara muy conocida en Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School, donde asiste constantemente a las reuniones del PTSA y apoya con su presencia y aporte todas las funciones y eventos. Ella puede hablar con propiedad de lo que ha visto en la escuela, para poder ayudar a la comunidad a superar obstáculos oportunamente y atender las necesidades, con el conocimiento de primera mano de la magnitud de cualquier situación y de su impacto en el resto de la comunidad.
“En mi equipo de campaña tuve voluntarios de las escuelas. Considero que hacer más eventos con los jóvenes, para mantenerlos involucrados es una excelente manera de motivarlos y darles sentido de pertenencia. Los jóvenes quieren sentirse aceptados, por eso forman sus grupos. Los que son rechazados son los que se meten en problemas, siempre habrá unos pocos. Queremos ayudar a que en Doral haya un lugar para todos y el involucramiento de los padres debe ser prioritario. Quiero asegurarme, y ese es uno de mis objetivos, que siempre habrá un ambiente seguro para los jóvenes de Doral. Yo represento solo un voto en el concejo, pero tengo la mejor intención de apoyar a los PTSA en las iniciativas que requieran el apoyo de la Ciudad. Mi compromiso y deseo es ser la voz de los jóvenes, los niños y los padres de la ciudad.”
Agradecida y honrada por la oportunidad de servir
“Por siempre estaré agradecida y honrada por la confianza que los ciudadanos han puesto en mí. No les defraudaré. En mi tienen no solamente una Concejal sino una amiga, una hermana, una hija para todos en la ciudad. Siempre estaré disponible, porque todo mi trabajo lo hago de corazón y las personas me han dado esta tremenda oportunidad.”
“A quienes no me apoyaron durante la campaña les digo que también soy su Concejal, que les mostraré todo lo que puedo hacer. Somos todos vecinos, mis puertas siempre estarán abiertas para recibirles. Espero que en una futura oportunidad puedan apoyarme”,
Christi Fraga tiene el deseo y la inquietud de continuar en el servicio público. “Tal vez en el futuro habrán otras situaciones, otros caminos que desee seguir, no quiero apurar las cosas. Quiero aprender lo que no sé para después compartir mi conocimiento con la próxima generación. Espero poder ser mentor y guía para muchos otros.”
“Una vez alguien me llamó ‘La Princesa de Doral’ y la verdad no me gusta que me digan así. Prefiero ser considerada ‘La hija de Doral’. Quiero servir a la comunidad por largo tiempo en el futuro siempre que la comunidad desee que yo continúe haciéndolo.”
