City of Doral Council present at the 2014 Florida League of Cities Conference.
The use of technology in the future of municipal administration and operation was the central theme of the 88th Florida League of Cities Conference that took place from August 14th to August 16th in Hollywood, Florida.
The workshops offered a myriad of themes ranging from “Cities 101” for newly appointed officials to presentations on Council-Manager Relations, Crisis communications, Ethics, Economic Development, Cloud Technology, Cyber Security and Disaster Recovery and other themes intended to help elected officials throughout the state to get educated to better serve their communities.
As the “united voice for Florida’s municipal governments” the Florida League of Cities was founded with the goal of serving Florida’s cities and promoting local self-government. More than 400 towns, villages and cities in the State are members, Doral among them.
Although Vice Mayor Christi Fraga was not able to attend the conference this year, she considers these events “a great way to enhance our knowledge and leadership skills. It affords us the opportunity to meet with other elected officials and government professionals to discuss new approaches to public policy and gain insight into the issues that challenge many of our communities daily.”
Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez considered an honor being able to represent Doral once again at the event and having the opportunity to attend the networking activities along with the “legislative policy committee meetings regarding Finance and Tax, Transportation and Intergovernmental Relations, Growth Management and Economic Development.”
Councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera considers this conference gave Doral elected officials “a peak into the future that we live in. We saw workshops on wearable computing, cloud technology, social media engagement, big data transfers and more. It all gave us a glimpse on how things will be and how we can use technology to improve the quality of life of our residents.” Also this invaluable networking opportunity with other elected officials around the State allowed her to share experiences on how others have handled current Doral issues like private-public libraries and traffic. She became member of the International Board and initiated the process of working with the League to passing the Human Trafficking and the Service Animals Ordinances state wide.
Mayor Luigi Boria attended the presentation by David Nour on “Innovative technology and the relationship with citizens” and commented that in the conference they “learned a lot in areas such as leadership, technology, ethics and Sunshine Law. We are thrilled to bring fresh ideas to our beautiful city. This meeting is a great opportunity to continue positioning Doral within the most influential cities in our State.”

Conferencia de la Liga de las Ciudades 2014

El impacto del uso de la tecnología en la operación y administración municipal constituyó el tema principal de la Conferencia de la Liga de las Ciudades de Florida, realizada recientemente en Hollywood, Florida.
Los temas de las presentaciones incluyeron desde una guía de orientación inicial para nuevos oficiales electos, hasta Relaciones Concejales-Administración; Crisis de comunicación; Ética; Desarrollo Económico; Tecnología Cloud; Seguridad Informática y Recuperación de datos, entre otros, orientados a educar a los oficiales electos para servir mejor a sus comunidades.
La Liga de las Ciudades es considerada la “voz unificada de los gobiernos municipales del Estado”. Tiene el objetivo de servir a las municipalidades y promover los gobiernos autónomos locales.
Aun cuando la Vice Alcalde Christi Fraga no pudo asistir este año, considera que estos eventos “constituyen una excelente manera de expandir nuestro conocimiento y habilidades de liderazgo, y permiten la oportunidad de conocer otros oficiales electos y profesionales del gobierno para discutir diferentes puntos de vista sobre políticas públicas y los retos que enfrentamos diariamente en nuestras comunidades.”
Para la Concejal Ana María Rodríguez fue un honor representar nuevamente a Doral en este evento y participar en las actividades de intercambio con los “comités legislativos en las reuniones sobre Impuestos, Finanzas, Transporte, Relaciones intergubernamentales, Administración y Crecimiento y Desarrollo Económico.”
La Concejal Bettina Rodríguez Aguilera considera que esta conferencia permitió a los oficiales de Doral tener un “vistazo al futuro. Participamos en conferencias sobre ‘wearable computing’ (lentes Google), tecnología Cloud, Manejo de Redes Sociales, y otros aspectos donde la tecnología ayuda a mejorar la calidad de vida de los residentes”. Esta también fue la oportunidad para compartir experiencias con otros oficiales municipales sobre el manejo de situaciones como el tráfico automotor o las bibliotecas públicas-privadas. Rodríguez Aguilera se incorporó al Comité internacional de la Liga e inició el proceso de comunicaciones para lograr la adopción en todo Florida de las Ordenanzas sobre Tráfico Humano y Animales de Servicio que Doral está actualmente adoptando.
El Alcalde Luigi Boria asistió a la presentación de David Nour sobre “Innovación tecnológica y la interacción con los ciudadanos” y comentó que en esta conferencia pudieron aprender sobre “liderazgo, tecnología, ética y las Leyes de Florida (Sunshine Law). Estamos muy entusiasmados de traer ideas novedosas para nuestra bella ciudad; esta conferencia es una gran oportunidad de continuar posicionando a Doral como una de las ciudades más influyentes del Estado.”
