Colombian Paulina Vega is Miss Universe.
The general comment after meeting Paulina Vega was that “This could be the year for Colombia” and it came true.
The City of Doral, Florida was the host city for the Miss Universe Pageant for three weeks, full of activities that concluded with the Gala of the Pageant on January 25th where the beautiful twenty-two year old Paulina Vega Dieppa from Barranquilla, Colombia was crowned Miss Universe.
She became a favorite of the public and the press since the beginning. Her poise, charm, looks and most of all her attitude, that reflected a well-rounded, mature girl, with a high self-esteem for sure made the difference for the jury, which selected her over the contestants from USA, Netherlands, Croatia and Jamaica, who were the runner-ups.
The press room at the Trump Doral Resort was crowded with accredited reporters from all over the world. There were people from Philippines, Malaysia, France, Venezuela, Colombia among other countries. Some of them stayed in hotels in Doral while others preferred Miami Beach and other areas of Miami-Dade County. What all of them agreed upon was to appreciate the organization of the events and all the resources the Miss Universe Organization provided for fulfilling the task of keeping the world informed on what was happening at the most viewed event of the year.
The expense of $2.5 million incurred by the City of Doral to become the host location of the pageant has created controversy among residents long before the contestants arrived. However, leaving all economic considerations aside, hosting the pageant was an unforgettable experience for those who had the chance of attending the several events held around the city and were capable of seeing beyond the glamour of the occasion.
There are not many chances of participating on an event that gathers together that many people from different countries, beliefs and cultures working towards the same purpose. And this purpose was something beautiful, constructive and peaceful. It was one of the few chances where “World Peace” seems possible, and it was really good having the chance of experiencing it, at least for a few days in our own back yard.
Preliminary Competition – January 21st
The contestants showcased their evening gowns and swimsuits during this competition that allowed the jury to select the final 15 among the 88 that participated.
The highlight of the night was the National Costume competition. There were trees, eagles, glaciers, fallen walls and Van Gogh paintings; even a ‘hockey match’, complete with a led screen that Miss Canada showcased with poise and a smile.
Popular voting through Twitter selected Miss Indonesia as the National Costume winner. It was a beautiful fantasy in gold and black, weighting 40 lbs which represented temples and deities from her country.
The Final night – January 25th
While contestants were getting ready at FIU, local authorities and members of the jury appeared at the red carpet at Trump Doral Resort.
Looking very elegant appeared Mayor of Doral Luigi Boria with his wife Graciela, Vice Mayor Sandra Ruiz, Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez and Councilman Pete Cabrera. Also in attendance were Eddy Rojas, City Manager, Danny Espino City Attorney, and staff from Public Affairs, office of the Mayor and Security.
Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz arrived with his wife and all of them went to FIU together to attend the gala where Paulina Vega was crowned Miss Universe.
Exclusive interview with Miss Universe
Once she arrived and got installed in her home in New York City, Paulina Vega gave an exclusive interview to Doral Family Journal, to share her emotions after the contest and send greetings to the residents of Doral.
Paulina is very cheerful, friendly and talkative. Her easy laughter and enthusiastic temperament make her easily feel comfortable in the conversation. She says her first impression after being crowned Miss Universe is the “radical change I have experienced in just four days. The fact I am living alone in one of the largest cities in the world. I am very happy to be living the best experience, one for which I prepared for a long time. “
Gratefully she acknowledges the support received from her parents and also the Colombian public, her seven siblings and all her family that were praying for her triumph. But most of all she appreciates the advice of her mother, who was with her throughout her stay in the contest and walked her off at the airport. “My mom always was with me and told me that everything is positive, that I can do anything and that it will be a great experience.”
She takes very seriously being an example and role model for girls and teenagers and want people to appreciate that she is a smart woman, professional and committed to being a good reference for those who see her as an inspiration.
Paulina vehemently defends the answer she gave to the final question at the pageant, about what women can learn from men.
Following her response, a series of tweets with the hashtag #EsUnaPreguntaMuyDificil (It is a difficult question) appeared in Colombia, mocking her answer. Paulina responds with serenity “If you’re in the world of entertainment you have to be strong and not stop to destructive criticism. Intelligence is not measured by one question. It seems a bit ignorant from other people criticizing such things. “
“I had not seen the hashtag but I stand by my answer, because one has to be authentic, one has to be vulnerable, because we are human. At that time I found the question difficult and that is what I meant. I won the Miss Universe, because I’m real, because I’m not afraid to show I am a human being and I’m not afraid of being wrong or taking my time to think an answer to a question. I am very committed to representing the Colombian people and to show solidarity and love to everyone.”
Paulina’s response to the question was “Women must learn that there are men who do believe in equality.”
She believes that “it is a very sensitive issue and something worth fighting for. There are women like me that believe in it and we need the support and solidarity to help women who don’t. I’ve lived with these women and I visited foundations where men own everything and women are treated like objects. There were even candidates who told me how things were in their countries; that made that response come from my heart. I know it’s true. “
“I want to be a role model and show girls who see us as something unreal, with all the makeup and glamour, not to mind having the nose or dimensions society calls perfect, but to cultivate what we have inside, helping others, have a big heart, see the positive things, that’s what really matters. Participating in pageants we have to be careful about how we act, we become an example. We are spokespersons for important messages for humanity and we must show women that we can do whatever we want and that we have the same rights as men. “
Her job as Miss Universe begins very early in the morning with hair and makeup session and then a busy schedule of events, trips and activities, especially with the various foundations and initiatives supported by the organization. “The funny thing is that there is always a surprise, something new to experience. One day we will be in Dubai, Indonesia, Philippines… do not know how will be my day, but the important thing is to live it with enthusiasm and excitement. “
She wishes there would be the possibility of returning to Colombia as Miss Universe soon, because that would cause her great joy, but she still is not sure when that will be possible. For now her residence is in New York from where she travels to all commitments assigned by the organization.
She wants to help a foundation that is responsible for feeding needy children, because that is a cause dear to her heart. “If a child does not have anything to eat, how will he be able to study and progress? I hope we can work on that project through the organization. “
Having the attention of the world on her shoulders does not scare her away from a challenge for undertaking “great responsibility and commitment. The important thing is to have fun, be authentic and not forgetting the values that my parents instilled in me; Knowing that this glamorous life is temporary, and learn a lot to become always a better Paulina, because I have a whole life ahead. “
She was thrilled to receive videos from Bogota and Barranquilla celebrating her triumph, because for her it is very important to put very high the name of Colombia, after more than fifty years that a Colombian takes the crown of Miss Universe.
For the City of Doral, its authorities and citizens, Miss Universe left a message: “I love the Mayor, he is Venezuelan, Latino, and I identified a lot with him, with his personality. The work they have done is impressive. His wife is from Cali, Colombia and I met her and had time to share with them in some events. I truly admire and commend them for all their work. The fact that Doral is full of Colombians and Latinos made me feel like I was in my country. We were greeted with much love and affection and supported us. It is a city with much to offer and I promise to be a good ambassador for the city that welcomed me with open arms during the contest. “
La Colombiana Paulina Vega es Miss Universo

Desde la fiesta de inicio del certamen Miss Universo, realizada en la Ciudad de Doral en Florida, se comentaba que este año sería ‘el año de Colombia’ y así fue.
Tres intensas semanas de eventos y competencias concluyeron con la gala final del concurso el Domingo 25 de enero, donde Miss Colombia Paulina Vega Dieppa, barranquillera de 22 años, se alzó con la corona. Su gracia, preparación y simpatía habían conquistado desde el principio un puesto entre las favoritas del público y de la prensa e hicieron lo propio con los jurados, marcando la diferencia sobre las representantes de Estados Unidos, Croacia, Holanda y Jamaica quienes completaron el cuadro final.
La sala de prensa habilitada en el Trump Doral Resort estaba a reventar con los representantes de los medios acreditados para cubrir el evento, venidos de todas partes del mundo. Reporteros de Filipinas, Malasia, Francia, Colombia y Venezuela entre otros, algunos de ellos hospedados en hoteles de Doral, otros en Miami Beach y otras áreas del Condado Miami-Dade, coincidieron en comentar la buena organización, puntualidad y recursos puestos a disposición por la organización Miss Universo para llevar a cabo la tarea de informar al mundo las incidencias del evento que tuvo a la pequeña municipalidad al Sur de los Estados Unidos revolucionada desde mucho antes de la llegada de las participantes, debido a la controversia respecto a la rentabilidad de utilizar $2.5 millones del municipio para adquirir los derechos de ciudad anfitriona del concurso.
Estudios económicos aparte, el certamen fue realmente una experiencia inolvidable para quienes tuvieron la disposición y aprovecharon la oportunidad de acudir a los eventos relacionados para interactuar con las participantes y con los visitantes, tratando de ver más allá de la frivolidad y las apariencias. Pocas veces se encuentran juntas tantas personas de tantas nacionalidades diferentes con un fin común. Y en este caso era un fin alegre, bonito, constructivo y pacífico. Un testamento que con un poquito de buena voluntad de cada uno es posible construir la “Paz Mundial”, así sea por unos días.
La Competencia Preliminar – 21 de Enero
Los desfiles realizados en traje de baño y traje de gala durante ese evento, en conjunto con las entrevistas realizadas por los jurados durante la semana determinaron las 15 semifinalistas que serían anunciadas en la noche final.
El momento más resaltante de la noche preliminar fue el desfile en el llamado “Traje típico”, donde hubo de todo. Desde Araguaneyes, pasando por fantasías de águilas, glaciares, muros caídos y cuadros de Van Gogh, hasta una cancha de hockey lucida con toda la gracia del caso por Miss Canadá.
Por votación popular vía Twitter se escogió la ganadora de esta categoría, resultando seleccionada Miss Indonesia, con un traje que pesaba 40 libras, realmente impresionante, en negro y dorado, representativo de los templos y deidades de su país.
La noche final
Mientras las participantes se preparaban para la competencia en el recinto de FIU, las autoridades locales y personalidades del jurado hacían su aparición en la alfombra roja en el Trump Doral.
Por allí desfilaron en sus mejores galas el Alcalde Luigi Boria con su elegante esposa Graciela, al igual que la Vice Alcalde Sandra Ruiz y los concejales Ana María Rodríguez y Pete Cabrera. Por parte de la Alcaldía se encontraban presentes también Eddy Rojas, Administrador Municipal y Danny Espino, Abogado Municipal, además del personal de Relaciones Publicas, oficina del Alcalde y seguridad. También hizo acto de presencia el Comisionado José Pepe Díaz y juntos se trasladaron a FIU para presenciar la gala donde Paulina Vega fue coronada Miss Universo.
Entrevista exclusiva con Miss Universo
Una vez instalada en su casa en Nueva York, Paulina Vega otorgó una entrevista exclusiva a Doral Family Journal, para compartir sus emociones posteriores al concurso y enviar un saludo a los residentes de Doral.
Como buena colombiana costeña, Paulina es sumamente alegre, simpática y conversadora. De risa fácil y temperamento entusiasta, entra rápidamente en confianza y comenta entre sus primeras impresiones con el título de Miss Universo el hecho de vivir sola “en una de las más grandes ciudades del mundo, mi vida ha cambiado radicalmente en cuatro días. Estoy muy feliz de vivir al máximo una experiencia para la cual me preparé por mucho tiempo.”
Agradece profundamente el apoyo recibido de sus padres y sus siete hermanos, además del público colombiano que estaba ligando su triunfo. Pero por sobre todo agradece los consejos de su madre, quien estuvo con ella a todo lo largo de su estadía en el concurso y la acompañó hasta despedirla en el aeropuerto. “Mi mamá estuvo siempre conmigo y me ha dicho que todo lo que viene es positivo y va a ser una gran experiencia.”
Asume con mucha seriedad el ser ejemplo y modelo para las jóvenes y adolescentes y quiere que las personas puedan apreciar que ella es una mujer inteligente, profesional y comprometida a ser una buena referencia para quienes la vean como inspiración.
Paulina defiende con vehemencia la respuesta que dio a la pregunta final del concurso sobre qué pueden las mujeres aprender de los hombres. En Colombia a raíz de su respuesta surgieron una serie de tweets con la etiqueta #EsUnaPreguntaMuyDificil
Ante este comentario Paulina responde con mucho aplomo y serenidad que “Si uno está en el mundo de entretenimiento tienes que ser fuerte y no parar a las críticas destructivas. La inteligencia no se mide por una pregunta. Me parece un poquito ignorante el que critica ese tipo de cosas.”
“El hashtag no lo había visto, pero a mí me gustó responder así, porque uno tiene que ser auténtico, uno tiene que ser un ser humano. En ese momento me pareció una pregunta muy difícil y es lo que quise expresar. Por eso gané el Miss Universo, porque soy auténtica, porque no me da miedo demostrar la naturalidad del ser humano y no me da miedo equivocarme. Yo estoy muy comprometida a representar la gente colombiana y la solidaridad y amor que nos debemos los unos a los otros.”
La respuesta de Paulina a la ‘pregunta difícil’ fue “Las mujeres debemos aprender que hay hombres que si creen en la igualdad”.
Ella considera que “es un tema muy delicado y un tema por el que estamos luchando un grupo de mujeres y necesitamos el apoyo y solidaridad de las mujeres que no creen en ello. Yo he vivido con esas mujeres y he visitado fundaciones donde el hombre es dueño del objeto que es la mujer, y ellas pendientes de que el hombre maneje todo. Incluso hubo candidatas que me contaron como eran las cosas en sus países. Eso hizo que esa respuesta me saliera del corazón. Y sé que es verdad.”
“Yo quiero ser un ejemplo a seguir y mostrarle a las niñas que nos ven como algo irreal con el maquillaje que no importa tener la nariz o las medidas perfectas según la sociedad, sino cultivar lo que tenemos por dentro, ayudar a los otros, tener un gran corazón, ver las cosas positivas, eso es lo que realmente importa. Participar en los reinados es delicado porque tenemos que tener cuidado con como actuamos, nos volvemos un ejemplo. Somos voceras de los mensajes importantes para la humanidad y debemos mostrarles a las mujeres que somos capaces de hacer todo lo que queramos y que tenemos los mismos derechos de los hombres.”
Su trabajo como Miss Universo comienza muy temprano en la mañana con sesión de peinado y maquillaje y luego una apretada agenda de eventos, viajes y actividades, sobre todo en las diferentes fundaciones o iniciativas apoyadas por la organización. “Lo más divertido es que siempre hay una sorpresa, algo nuevo que experimentar. Un día estaremos en Dubái, en Indonesia, en Filipinas… No se cómo van a ser mis días, pero lo importante es vivirlos con entusiasmo y emoción.”
Espera que pueda haber la posibilidad de regresar a Colombia como Miss Universo pronto, pues eso le causaría mucha alegría, pero aún no tiene la certeza de cuándo será posible. Por lo pronto su residencia es en Nueva York desde donde viajará a cumplir con los compromisos que le asigne la organización.
Quiere poder ayudar alguna fundación que se encargue de la alimentación de los niños más necesitados, pues esa es una causa que le llega profundamente. “¿Si un niño no tiene con qué comer como va a poder estudiar y progresar? Espero que podamos trabajar en ese proyecto. “
Tener la atención del mundo entero sobre sus hombros lejos de asustarla representa un reto que asume con “gran responsabilidad y compromiso. Lo importante es divertirse, ser autentico que no se le suban a uno los humos a la cabeza y no olvidar los valores que me inculcaron mis papas. Saber que esta vida glamorosa es algo pasajero, aprender muchísimo y que de esto salga una mejor Paulina, pues tengo toda la vida por delante.”
La emocionó mucho recibir videos desde Bogotá y Barranquilla de la celebración por su triunfo, pues para ella es muy importante dejar muy en alto el nombre de Colombia, más aun después de más de cincuenta años que una colombiana se llevara la corona de Miss Universo.
Para la Ciudad de Doral, anfitriona del concurso, sus autoridades y ciudadanos Miss Universo dejó un mensaje muy cariñoso: “Al Alcalde lo amo, es venezolano, latino, me identifiqué mucho con él con su personalidad. El trabajo que han hecho es impresionante. Su esposa es caleña, colombiana y me parece un espectáculo de persona. Tuve tiempo de compartir con ellos en algunos eventos y los admiro mucho y los felicito por todo el trabajo. El hecho que Doral este lleno de colombianos y latinos me hizo sentir como en mi país. Nos recibieron con mucho amor y cariño y nos apoyaron. Es una ciudad con mucho para ofrecer y seré una buena embajadora de la ciudad que me recibió con los brazos abiertos durante el concurso.”
