Doral, considered to be one of the best places to live in the United States, has grown immensely since it became a city 10 years ago, and although it offers many good things especially for families with children, there is still more than can be done.  Graciela Boria, wife of our mayor Luigi Boria, wants to contribute to our community.  She felt that in Doral there were not sufficient mechanisms to help families with monetary needs.

Gabriela explains, “There is a perception that all residents of Doral have a high income, however there are many people with financial needs.  We have immigrants that were professionals in their home country, but upon arriving here they have had to reinvent themselves for whatever reason.   Their standard of living has been adjusted to the local costs, which in our city are not particularly low.  These residents, women in many cases, have had a hard time because they are single mothers or divorced, and although it appears that they have a decent socioeconomic level, in reality they have financial problems”.  It is for this reason, thinking about these families and above all these children, that the first lady of Doral decided to contact all the preschools that exist in the city (more than 20) to help them understand how they can benefit from government aids and grants in order to offer a more complete service and furthermore improve their costs.  In this way the families and our community in general are helped.

These preschools are private, and although they somehow compete with one another (because they have to run a business) at the end they all want to work towards the best interest and welfare of the child.  In the existing VPK (Voluntary Prekindergarten) program the government pays for 3 hours of instruction for a child between the ages of 4 and 5 years old.  But the remainder of the school hours has to be sponsored by the parents who many times do not have an income to cover this expense.  When this occurs everyone loses: the preschools because they lose the student and a source of income, and the families because they find themselves removing the child from the centers leaving them at home without the stimulation and social exposition that are so important in this stage of their development.

Boria says, “In this country there are many organizations and foundations, like Children’s Trust, that support education programs especially for children between 0 and 5 years.”  Currently the federal government is focusing in this initial phase of a child’s development.  Boria comments, “If we as a community do not wake up and unite, then we are not going to receive government grants, because they believe that our city does not need any aid.  On the other hand if we educate ourselves and learn about all the wonderful programs and grants offered that support schools, then at the end we will all benefit.”  Other cities of our county have learned to make the most of this governmental assistance.  ?

Some of the directors of these schools, many of which have functioned for various years, were unaware of all these programs that the government offers to benefit the children, teachers and parents.  This aid is not only monetary but can be offered through training, workshops, seminars, written material, donation of books, etc.  On average, preschools in our city are functioning at a 60% capacity.  Boria adds, “They (the directors) are impressed of how they have let many opportunities go by that could have benefited them.  Up until now they have been working solely with their own resources. ??

Therefore Boria created a coalition, together with all the preschool directors, called Doral Early Childhood Initiative, and has met with them on several occasions.   “We do not do fundraising and we are not a foundation, it is simply a group formed by these directors that use me as a vehicle to be united, to share experiences and to help each other.  In these meetings they give out information; they carry out workshops among others things.  They are very enthusiastic, and communicate tips and material that eventually will benefit the families of our city.”  Boria clarifies, “Our coalition seeks to unite us so that we all share any information that can be of common interest.  If any particular request to the government is carried out by 20 preschools, then the petition will be much more powerful than if only one center did it by itself.”  ?

This initiative can be generalized to other activities of the city like summer camps that are sometimes quite costly.  With the experience acquired with the preschools we will be able to request governmental support that will ultimately improve the costs of these vacation plans.  Likewise to open a preschool for children with special needs.  ?

Thanks to the concern of Graciela Boria these preschools are getting together to favor the children of Doral.  What she is looking for is that all these preschools prosper, and so in the end the city benefits since they can offer alternatives depending on the interests and needs of each family.

Boria concludes enthusiastically, “I love to help my city!  I want to transform things, to seek ideas, to unite people… These children are the future of our community.  At this early age we create the foundation of the children that will grow and become teens and young adults.  We must take care of them; occupy them with accessible and healthy activities for all.  We have to be able to offer them alternatives.”  Consequently Doral will continue to be one of the best cities to live in this country.

“Ayudar a mi ciudad me apasiona!

  • Doral Early Childhood Initiative is very proud of Graciela Boria and her motivation to make a difference in the lives of children in the City of Doral. As a Director I am very grateful for all that she has done and for all the directors participating!!!

  • Graciela Boria’s commitment to the children and families in our community is inspirational. I feel honored to be part of this initiative.
