La búsqueda de la excelencia es una constante en el ser humano, cada acción que se realiza tiene como fin alcanzar la cima mas alta de la perfección, aunque sea algo aparentemente simple. Y como la naturaleza humana es de por si complicada, no es insólito comprobar que en ese camino a la realización los obstáculos mas duros nacen de la certeza que los seres humanos compiten fuertemente entre si,  haciendo daño cuando la lid no es justa.  Afortunadamente, la otra cara de la moneda también toma acción, personas con valores muy altos  entienden bien que la unión y la colaboración es la única opción de conseguir un beneficio común y en base a ello, es que se han logrado obras maravillosas. Este país tiene  sus cimientos  en  el trabajo en equipo, en la solidaridad, en la vida en comunidad. Lo que buscamos decir es que los éxitos mas grandes han surgido de la colaboración desinteresada  de individuos consientes del que el logro mas grande es el bien común y que no han detenido sus objetivos pese a miles de obstáculos.

Entra en colación entonces la historia de Ciudad del Doral, y de ahí nace una anécdota bastante singular: una amiga suiza muy querida había estudiado en la Universidad de Miami a fines de los años 80 y luego de graduarse regresó a Europa  y escasamente volvió a Miami. Hace poco yo la visité y cuando le conté que vivía en el Doral me sorprendió su extrañeza: como puedes vivir ahí? me dijo, “si es un lugar horrible, sólo hay almacenes y cementerios”.   Tuvimos que ir al computador y cuando le enseñé lo que era Doral hoy, no me podía creer.  La metamorfosis de la ciudad había sido tan grande que hasta se tuvo que disculpar. Todo se había logrado por  el trabajo de cientos de activistas, negociantes, voluntarios y seres comunes y corrientes que tomaron la decisión de hacer de Doral una ciudad grande y maravillosa. Y este logro no es de una sola persona , ni de un grupo de personas, si no de una comunidad entera que supo imponer, pese a mucha resistencia, que el aporte joven de la mentalidad hispana podía alcanzar a realizar las proezas mas impensables .  Y aquí están algunos de esos resultados:

Está considerada la ciudad de la Florida para la creación de empresas según Business Week;  Se situa en el puesto # 2 entre las 25 mejores ciudades del país para vivir bien, esto  por su oferta cultural, pro-empresarial, medio ambiente, y mano de obra altamente capacitada según Forbes.com

La ciudad de Doral ocupa el lugar 51 entre los 100 mejores lugares para vivir y lanzar un negocio en los Estados Unidos y ha sido nombrada el tercer mejor lugar en los EE.UU. para jubilarse

por EE.UU. News & World Report.  Aparte fue nombrada Tree City USA…Tiene una de las tasas impositivas a la propiedad mas baja del  Condado Dade y todas las escuelas publicas y charter tienen la clasificación “A”.

La ciudad del Doral fue creada con el objetivo de ser el mejor lugar para vivir, trabajar, estudiar y jugar.   Con casi 48,000 habitantes, alrededor de 150,000 personas trabajan en la ciudad, existen 26 cámaras de comercio y organizaciones de negocios, 48 hoteles y mas de 54 bancos.  Se han otorgado 12,000 licencias y existen  9000 negocios. Existen 12 estaciones  de televisión y estudios de transmisión y retransmisión. Si se habla de educación, a parte de tener las mejores escuelas, tiene 10 universidades altamente calificadas. Asociaciones locales continuamente realizan labores de ayuda a la educación y promoción a la cultura. El Doral Art Festival  reúne cada año maestros  reconocidos en las diversas manifestaciones que el arte implica.  Los parques y clubes  son áreas deportivas de excelencia, sede  muchas competencias locales e internacionales  y lugar preciso para el desarrollo físico y esparcimiento, y muy pronto incluso, se contará con un parque para mascotas. Eventos solidarios  como Relay of Life o Autism Speaks llenan el parque JC cada año y son grandes los aportes económicos a esas nobles causas.

Todos estos aspectos llaman a una sola conclusión, Doral ha buscado la excelencia y en su camino a esta perfección ha solventado tropiezos, errores, problemas etc., que no la han detenido sino motivado a seguir adelante.

Volviendo al encabezado  de esta nota, un reciente evento ocurrido en esta ciudad hace pocos días me hizo recordar la tan mentada frase de Cervantes… cuando uno comienza a impactar, a conseguir logros, a alcanzar el éxito, es cuando vienen los grandes problemas, condición humana reconocida ya siglos atrás…

Que sucedió?:  Una carta anónima acusando  al Jefe de Policía de la ciudad por  corrupción,  llego a la alcaldía y posteriormente a los medios de comunicación.  Inmediatamente se inició una investigación a nivel de fiscalía, la cual está en proceso y por tanto nos exime y prohíbe de siquiera comentar e intrevistar. Este es un problema grave, la primera denuncia de ese tipo en la historia del Doral, pero en una democracia es válido y saludable hacer uso de la libertad para exigir que se cumpla la ley.

Lógicamente saludamos cualquier iniciativa que tenga como fin el bienestar de la comunidad, pero con la mesura y la ecuanimidad que corresponde.  No se puede exagerar y sacar conclusiones de algo que no ha terminado.

Este es el mensaje que queremos enviar, concentrémonos en los bueno, solucionemos lo malo, pero sigamos unidos. Esta no debe ser nunca  la ciudad de los rumores, esta debe ser la ciudad  de la gente valiente que lo dejó todo atrás, que se adaptó, que luchó y que salió adelante. Que no cambió su cultura si no que la enriqueció, que supo reconocer todo lo bueno que le daba su nuevo país y lo aprovechó.

Doral, between a demand and progress.

 The drive for excellence part of human nature, every action is aimed at achieving perfection, even if it appears to be something simple. And since human mature itself is complicated, it goes without saying that it is in the pursuit of these actions that the largest obstacles appear from humans competing within themselves, causing damage when the competition is not fair. Fortunately, the converse is also true, persons with high values and morals understand that it is only through union and collaboration that mutual benefits can be reached, and many wonderful things have been accomplished. This country has its foundations on teamwork and the sense of community. What we are trying to say is that the greatest accomplishments have come from the selfless collaboration of individuals who are aware that the common goal is more important than personal gains, and will not stop their drive for success for any obstacle. This brings to mind the history of the City of Doral, where a very particular anecdote arises. A very nice Swiss friend of mine studied in the University of Miami at the age of her late 80’s and went back to Europe following graduation only to quickly return to Miami. I visited her not to long ago and when I told her I lived in Doral, she exclaimed in surprise “how can you live in that place? “ she said. “ It’s a horrible place, just a bunch of warehouses and graveyards”. We had to go online and when I showed her what Doral is today, she could not believe it.

The transformation had been so great that she even apologized. It was all done through the work of hundreds of activists, businessmen, volunteers, and everyday people who decided to make Doral a marvelous city. It is not the success of a single person, not a group of persons, but rather of an entire community with a drive, Hispanic mentality that was able to keep pushing forward amid adversity to achieve the unthinkable. And here are some of the results:

• Named “Tree City USA”
• One of the lowest property tax rates in Miami-Dade county
• All public & charter schools are rated “A”

The City of Doral was created with the objective of being the best place to live, work, study and play.  With almost 48,000 habitants, around 150,000 work in the city, there are 26 chambers of commerce & business organizations, 48 hotels, 54 banks. There have been 12,000 licenses given and there are over 9000 existing businesses. There are 12 television stations, and broadcasting studios. In the topic of education, apart from having the best schools, there are 10 highly certified universities. Local groups are constantly having events for aid and promoting different cultures. The Doral Art Festival unites recognized artists from all styles, year after year. The parks and clubs are areas with excellent athletic facilities and are often home to local and international competitions as well as perfect places for physical development. Doral will also count on a park for pets in the coming future. Fundraises and awareness events such as the Relay for Life or Autism Speaks fill the JC Bermudez Park every year and yield significant economic support to these noble causes.

All of these factors lead to one conclusion, the City of Doral has always sought excellence and in its path to perfections it has encountered stumbles, mistakes, and problems, but none have stopped it, rather they have motivated it to keep pushing forward.

Going back to the title of this article, a recent event that occurred in this city brought to mind the memorable phrase form Cervantes, “when one starts to have an impact, achieving goals, reaching success, is when big problems arise, human condition known for centuries…”

So what happened? An anonymous letter was sent accusing the chief of police for corruption. An investigation was started immediately at the federal level, and thus prohibits us from even commenting on it. This is a serious problem, it  is the first time that our city faces such a serious situation, but in a democracy is valid and healthy to use your rights to ensure the law is followed.

Logically, we welcome any initiative towards community well being, but with the fairness and equanimity. We can’t exaggerate and draw premature conclusions either. This is the message we want to convey, lets concentrate on the good, fix the bad, but above all, stay united. This should never be the city of rumors, this should be the city of the brave who left it all behind and adapted, who fought and moved forward. Those who didn’t change their culture, but rather enriched it, who was able to see all of the good in this country and made the most of it. Let’s go Doral; you are much bigger than your problems.
