Doral Middle School’s Agriscience – A Unique Class!!!

When school commences this coming August an exciting class will be taught at Doral Middle School.  Marcela Caminos, a teacher with a degree in Medical Veterinary from Argentina and a Masters Degree in Science Education from Nova University, will take over the agriscience program at DMS.  This curriculum is quite unique and is not offered in many schools in our county (Felix Varela Senior High, John A. Ferguson Senior High, William H. Turner Technical Arts High School, Robert Morgan High School and Coral Reef High School have similar programs).  Doral Middle School has been privileged to have had this program running under the direction of Selena Castillo, up until this school year when Caminos will take over.

Caminos is extremely enthusiastic to run this class, where students will have the opportunity to work with both animals and crops. The animals that students work with are livestock mainly goats, rabbits and chickens. They learn the animals’ anatomy, how to take care of them, and even how to give them shots when necessary.   Students in general are usually more attracted to the study of livestock, but Ms. Caminos will also teach them how to grow and cultivate crops exposing them to a variety of plants and flowers. These will vary according to the season. “I want this to be a multidisciplinary experience for the students”, explains Caminos.

Caminos says that the most critical point will be the safety and well being of her students.  “There are many illnesses that can be transmitted from animals to humans”, she says. “My goal is to teach these kids to be responsible, by giving them basic safety precautions and by teaching them to use their common sense.”  Most of the animals are owned by the students who use the school’s facilities to provide an adequate environment for growth and development.

There are challenges to overcome, specially related to budget constraints.  Caminos has some innovative plans for this coming school year.  “I want to offer basic grooming services for dogs of our community, and by doing so students will learn how to bathe, shampoo, clip nails, etc; this way they study the animal’s anatomy in a productive way.  In addition we generate funds that will help us support our program.  Also my students will have the opportunity to continue to join the FFA Organization (Future Farmers of America) and participate in different types of competitions for the livestock, such as the Dade county fair and State Park”.

Caminos adds, “I would like to thank Ms. Caceres, the principal of DMS, as well as Ms. Castillo, the former agriscience teacher”. Their support has been very important and I am sure that together we will make the most out of this unique class and achieve what our mission statements says: strive to increase awareness of global and technological importance of agriculture and its contribution to our well-being. Strive to develop agricultural leadership and personal growth and encourage hands-on training in order to put students a step ahead toward career success.
