With high expectations, the Cadette Girl Scouts group visited the city of Doral Police Department on the night of January 29, 2013 to learn about internet use, drugs awareness and bullying. Officer Noel Feliciano who was in charge of welcoming, leading the talk to the girls and answering their questions, also created a fun and open environment where the Girl Scouts (all middle school students) were able to voice their concerns.

The topics discussed were illustrated with examples from everyday life, so that young people could learn how to react in real situations. As part of the content, it was considered the importance of avoiding drugs and risky situations, how to properly use electronic media, social networks and chat rooms, how to avoid being a victim of bullying and how to report such cases. As a souvenir, the girls took home several reading materials with tips and additional references.

Such talks create the appropriate situation for youngsters and parents to receive the same instruction which encourage meaningful conversations that benefit subsequent dialogue, strengthen trust and communication between them. As it was clearly expressed by Officer Feliciano: “Interaction with local police is important not only for the children, but for parents as well. Sometimes parents and children may have questions or doubts about drugs, safety or the law and they just don’t know who to ask. This is where a friendly police officer can play an important role. One of the things I like about talking to parents and children together is being able to reinforce or clarify a specific concern”. Officer Feliciano also encouraged parents to engage with their children’s activities and thus be alert to any danger.

These sessions are available to the entire community upon request and completely free of charge. Doral is privileged to have a police department willing to meet these requirements promptly and to adjust the information to the specific needs of the requesting organization. .
