Doral Preparatory Charter School: another option for our children.

Para leer en Español

This past September 19th the City of Doral approved a request by Doral Preparatory Charter School Developer  to enter a lease agreement  for the construction of a charter school on a 3-acre property owned by the city since 2007.  This property is located on the west side of theoretical NW 104th Avenue,     one block north of 66th Street.  The proposed charter school will include grades from K until 12th with a capacity of 900 students.

Basis for this Initiative

Our city is well known for its schools and their excellent performance.  In addition to the three K-8 centers (John I. Smith, Eugenia B. Thomas, and Dr. Rolando Espinosa), Doral counts with a middle school (that currently only offers 9th grade) and a high school (RRSHS).  Doral also has two charter schools: Renaissance Elementary and Middle, and Doral Academy which goes from Pre-K  until 12th grade.  Regardless of all the options that currently exist, Doral’s public school facilities are at or around 100% capacity.   The reason that the proposal for the construction and operation of a charter school was approved is due to the local residential growth.  Based on current approvals of residential developments, the area where this charter will be built will see an increase in over 2,000 residential units which equals to approximately 780 school aged children from kindergarten to the high school level.  A school in this area would serve as a great relief from Doral’s existing facilities.

Other Alternatives

Since this property was transferred to the City as part of a Transfer of  Development rights, the     property  must be used for a  public good.  Other potential uses for the property could include park space, municipal offices, public utilities and infrastructure or other jurisdictional public use such as   libraries.   In examining the abovementioned uses, the City does not have any need for additional municipal offices or public utility with the development of the City ’s new Government Center and Public Works  yard.  This proposed charter school will be constructed and operated at no cost to the City.

Everyone will Benefit

In conclusion, and in view of the analysis performed, this initiative of a new charter school will be favorable because it will offer additional choices for the parents of our community when dealing with the education of their children.  Doral is continually growing and developing, and it is encouraging to know that our city administrators are one step ahead in planning in order to alleviate the educational facilities that are already at maximum capacity.
