Experience and Direct Observation During the Creative Process.

Human beings, and especially the younger ones, use art making as a means to get to know the world around them, how it influences them and how they affect it. This is why at The Art Shack we try to facilitate as many direct observation situations of the world around us as possible. During the months of May and June several dogs, a rabbit and a fish were part of these encounters, and served as models for the artwork.

Before each direct observation students were encouraged to draw the animal they were to observe as they imagined it would look. These first pictures, although fresh, were stereotypical and, usually, imitations of adult conceptualizations. After this first drawing we encouraged the direct observation. When working with the fish, for example, the experience became a multisensory one, where the children not only smelled the fish but also got a chance to touch it’s eyes, stretch the fins, open the mouth, count the bones and even pick off scales and admire them. The drawing was immediately enriched by the experience and direct observation. The drawings and sculptures made during the same class showed enhanced attention to detail and a deeper knowledge of form. Additionally each representation also transpired the feelings elicited as well as that, which had mostly surprised each one.  For example, when opening the mouth of the fish, the children realized it had sharp teeth that they could touch. Consequently most of them drew them clearly, enlarging them in some cases, for they had been impacted by this unexpected detail.

In the final artwork, using repetition was richer still. Creativity and the playfulness of art enabled the exploration of new colors, freely taking a turn away form reality to reflect the happiness that the direct observation had brought about.
