Veterans Park is located in the heart of NW 33^rd Street in Doral. With its peaceful design, cozy atmosphere, well-kept lawn and ship shaped playground it is a favorite among the youngest of the residents of the city and of those that look for a quiet place to spend lunch hour.

The park is a few blocks away from the Southern Command and was inaugurated on November 1, 2010 to honor all Veterans residents of the City of Doral, for their sacrifice defending our freedom serving in all armed forces, at home soil and abroad.

At the entrance there is a beautiful Veterans Memorial, with the Star Spangled Banner waving proudly, surrounded by the flags of the five service branches: Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force and Marine Corps.  The pavers in the entrance bear inscriptions of many residents that have donated bricks to honor family members and friends for their past and present service. It is inspiring to read those brief and heartfelt messages.

Veterans Park will be the location for the City of Doral Veterans Day commemoration next Monday November 11^th at 10 am.

November 11 was set to be Veterans Day in remembrance of the Armistice that ended World War I in 1918 “at the 11^th day, of the 11^th month, at the 11^th hour”. President Gerald Ford signed the Law in 1975 to establish the annual observance of this holiday.

In Doral, we have many residents that are Veterans and served in Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan and many other destinies where the armed forces have required them. And among those Veterans that are around us every day there are several City of Doral employees that, after active armed service, continue to ensure the peace and wellbeing of our citizens by working in the Police Department and the Code Compliance Department of our city. Here are their stories:

 

Chief Richard Blom:

At age 18 signed up for the U.S. Navy and served during Vietnam War in Okinawa, Japan, Guam, Philippines and Vietnam. After almost 4 years of service, was honorably discharged in 1973. Right after that, he joined the Miami Police Department and since that time has been working hard to provide protection and ensure the safety of the citizens of the County and now leads the Police Department of the City of Doral.

Officer Rene Garcia:

A decorated Veteran from the United States Marine Corps, Officer Garcia performed active duty service from April 1989 to 1993 and active reserve service until July 2006, when he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

During his service he was deployed to Southwest Asia in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and also to Somalia. He was activated in support to Forward Operation’s Noble Eagle/Enduring Iraqi Freedom. He is trained in Marine Combat Infantry, Ordnance, Field Artillery, Naval Artillery, Close Air Support, and Counter terrorist.

He received the National Defense Service Medal (2 Stars), Sea Service Deployment Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (3 Stars), Combat Action Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Marine Good Conduct Medal (2 Stars), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal, and Meritorious Mast.

Officer Janssy Hernandez:

Enrolled in the U.S. Navy at age 19 during Gulf War, he was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on the Naval Ship USS Reeves. Their goal was to “be battle ready at any time”. 

Officer Hernandez credits his years in the Navy for his ability for teamwork, his knowledge of security, patrol and rescue procedures and his commitment to help and protect those in need. He has proudly served in the City of Doral Police Department for almost 6 years.

Officer Damian Markowycz:

Officer Markowycz served in the US Army Military Police Corps for seven years, until October 2011. During that period he was deployed 1 year to support Operation Iraqi Freedom, with the main mission of training the Iraqi Police Force and Route Clearance Missions.

Officer David Gonzalez:

 A member of the US Air Force Reserves for 9 years, Officer Gonzalez was trained in England, Germany and Italy as a fire fighter, specialized in structural fires, aircraft crash fires and rescue. In 1982 he was assigned to the 482 Tactical Fighter Wing in the Homestead Air Force Base and was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1986.

 

Adam Temple:

The current Director of Code Compliance of the City of Doral was a member of the US Navy for 5 years, until 2006.

He served onboard of the USS Constellation, which launched initial air strikes during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and was deployed to Bahrain, Kandahar and Bagram, Afghanistan and other locations in the Middle East during Operation Enduring Freedom.

A decorated Veteran, Adam Temple received a Purple Heart, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal and several other recognitions for his service.

Upon his return, Mr. Temple assisted in establishing the First Veteran Student Organization in the University of Miami and currently maintains life time memberships to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion y AMVETS organizations.

Luis Riesgo:

City of Doral Code Compliance Officer Luis Riesgo was a member of the US Coast Guard for 4 years, performing missions related to migration interdiction, search and rescue operations, law enforcement, boarding, port security and environmental response.

He served as a liaison to the Preventions/Marine Safety Department and during his time of service was awarded many accolades including: the Humanitarian Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star and the Coast Guard Presidential Unit Citation for the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. He also received the National Defense Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Coast Guard “E” Ribbon, the Meritorious Unit Commendation with 2 Gold Stars and several other important recognitions for his service.

 

Fernando Exposito:

Code Compliance Officer Fernando Exposito was active in the US Marine Corps Infantry between 1996 and 2000. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and Pusan, South Korea and spent 6 months on the USS Wasp patrolling the Mediterranean Sea. He also conducted operations in the Black Sea, Israel, Turkey, Greece, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Sea Service Ribbon and several other recognitions.

Currently Mr. Exposito serves in the US Army Reserves with the 482th Civil Affairs Battalion and has trained soldiers for combat deployment to Afghanistan. He attended the Army Airborne School in Georgia and has been awarded the Army Parachutist Badge.

 Ricardo Alarcon:

Code Compliance Officer Ricardo Alarcon has been part of the US Army Reserves since 2010 and is still active. He is the winner of the 758^th Engineer Company Best Warrior and the 841^st Engineer Battalion Best Warrior Competitions and a Commandants List Graduate from the Warrior Leadership Course last June.

 

Thanks to those who have served in the armed forces, we citizens are able to live free and in peace in our home soil. Freedom is not free, and there have been many that did not come back from duty, but for those who did, after serving with honor and dedication, Veterans Day is the day to show appreciation for their job well done.

When you see one of these silent heroes that walk among us, still protecting the welfare of our City, do not forget to say “Thank you for your service!”

Conozca a los Veteranos que trabajan para la Ciudad de  Doral

El Veterans Park está ubicado en el corazón de la calle 33 de Doral. Su diseño sencillo y su atmósfera acogedora, su césped bien cuidado y su hermoso parque infantil en forma de barco lo hacen el parque favorito de los residentes más jóvenes de la ciudad y de aquellos que buscan un remanso de quietud donde pasar un rato a la hora del almuerzo. Unas pocas cuadras separan el parque del Comando Sur.

Fue inaugurado el 1 de Noviembre del 2010 en honor a todos los Veteranos residentes de la Ciudad de Doral, como reconocimiento a su sacrificio al servir en las Fuerzas Armadas para defender la libertad, dentro y fuera del territorio de los EEUU.

En la entrada hay un hermoso monumento a los Veteranos, donde la Bandera Nacional ondea orgullosamente, rodeada por las banderas de las cinco Fuerzas Armadas: Ejército, Marina, Guardia Costera, Aviación e Infantería de Marina (Marine Corps). Los ladrillos del suelo de la entrada, donados por muchos residentes, tienen inscripciones grabadas en homenaje al servicio de familiares y amigos. Es muy inspirador leer esos breves y sentidos mensajes.

En el Veterans Park la Ciudad de Doral realizará la conmemoración del Día de los Veteranos el lunes 11 de Noviembre de 2013 a las 10 am.

El 11 de Noviembre fue designado Día de los Veteranos en recuerdo del Armisticio que selló el fin de la Primera Guerra Mundial en 1918 “a las 11 horas, del 11vo día del 11vo mes”. El Presidente Gerald Ford firmó en 1975 la ley federal estableciendo la conmemoración oficial anual de este día de fiesta en honor de los miembros de las Fuerzas Armadas de los EEUU.

En Doral muchos residentes son Veteranos que sirvieron en Vietnam, Corea, Irak, Afganistán y muchos otros destinos donde las fuerzas armadas los han requerido. Más aún, hay entre nosotros otro grupo de Veteranos quienes, después de haberse retirado del servicio activo en las Fuerzas Armadas, continúan sirviendo a la comunidad y asegurando la paz y el bienestar, pues trabajan como empleados de los Departamentos de Policía y de Normas y Procedimientos (Code Compliance) de la Ciudad de Doral.

Estas son sus historias:

 

Jefe de Policía Richard Blom:

Se enlistó en la Marina a los 18 años y sirvió durante la Guerra de Vietnam en Okinawa (Japón), Guam, Filipinas y Vietnam. Después de casi 4 años de servicio, fue dado de baja honorablemente en 1973.

Inmediatamente después de su retiro ingresó en el Departamento de Policía de Miami y desde entonces ha trabajado fuertemente para proteger y garantizar la seguridad de los ciudadanos. Actualmente lidera el Departamento de Policía de la Ciudad de Doral.

Oficial Rene García:

Es un Veterano Condecorado del United States Marine Corps. El Oficial García estuvo en servicio activo desde Abril 1989 hasta 1993 y luego en reserva activa hasta Julio 2006, cuando recibió la baja honorablemente, con el rango de Sargento.

Durante su servicio, fue enviado al Suroeste de Asia durante la Operación Escudo del Desierto/Tormenta del Desierto y también a Somalia. También fue como apoyo en la Operación de Avance Águila Noble / Libertad Duradera Iraquí. Está entrenado en Combate de Infantería, Artillería, Artillería de campaña, Artillería Naval, Soporte aéreo y Contraterrorismo.

Entre los numerosos reconocimientos recibidos cuenta con la Medalla al Servicio Nacional de Defensa (2 estrellas); Medalla al Despliegue de Servicio en el mar; Medalla al Servicio del suroeste de Asia (3 estrellas); Medalla a la Acción del combate; Kuwait Liberation Medal; Medalla a la Unidad Naval; Medalla de Buena Conducta (2 estrellas); Medalla de la Reserva de las Fuerzas Armadas Medalla; Medalla de la Reserva del Cuerpo de Infantería y  Meritorious Mast.

Oficial Janssy Hernández:

Entró en la Marina a los 19 años durante la Guerra del Golfo. Estuvo destinado en Pearl Harbor, Hawaii en el Buque de la Armada USS Reeves. El objetivo era “Estar listos para la batalla en cualquier momento.”

El Oficial Hernández atribuye sus habilidades de trabajo en equipo, sus conocimientos sobre seguridad, procedimientos de patrullaje y rescate y su compromiso a ayudar y proteger a los más necesitados a sus años en la Marina.

Ha sido oficial de policía de la Ciudad de Doral casi por 6 años.

Oficial Damián Markowycz:

El Oficial Markowycz sirvió en el Cuerpo de Policía Militar del Ejército durante siete años, hasta Octubre 2011. Durante ese periodo estuvo destinado por un año como apoyo a la Operación Libertad Iraquí, con el objetivo principal de entrenar a las fuerzas policiales de Irak y a las misiones de seguridad en carreteras.

Oficial David González:

Como miembro de la Reserva de la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos durante 9 años, el Oficial González fue entrenado en Inglaterra, Alemania e Italia, especializándose en el combate de incendios estructurales y en rescate durante incendios y accidentes de aviones. En 1982 fue asignado a la 482 Tactical Fighter Wing en la base aérea de Homestead y fue dado de baja honorablemente con el rango de Sargento Mayor en 1986.

 

Adam Temple:

El actual Director de Normas y Procedimientos de la Ciudad de Doral, fue miembro de la Marina de los EE.UU. durante 5 años, hasta 2006.

Sirvió a bordo del USS Constellation, que lanzó los ataques aéreos iniciales durante la Operación Libertad Iraquí, y fue enviado a Bahréin, Kandahar y Bagram, Afganistán y otros lugares de Oriente Medio durante la Operación Libertad Duradera.

Adam Temple recibió entre otras condecoraciones y reconocimientos el Corazón Púrpura, las medallas del Servicio de Defensa por la Guerra Global contra el Terrorismo,  la Medalla de Servicio Nacional y varios otros reconocimientos por su servicio.

Una vez retirado de la Marina, el Sr. Temple ayudó a establecer la primera organización estudiantil Veteranos en la Universidad de Miami y actualmente mantiene las membresías de por vida en la Organización de Veteranos de Guerras Extranjeras, la Legión Americana y la organización AMVTES.

Luis Riesgo:

Actualmente labora como  Oficial de Cumplimiento de Normas y Procedimientos para la Ciudad Doral. Fue miembro de la Guardia Costera por 4 años realizando misiones relacionadas con control y rescate de inmigrantes; patrullaje; control y embarque y seguridad portuaria y protección del medio ambiente.

Se desempeñó como enlace con el Departamento de Prevención y Seguridad Marítima y durante su tiempo de servicio recibió numerosos galardones incluyendo: la Medalla de Bronce de Servicio Humanitario con 1 Estrella y el Reconocimiento Presidencial a la Guardia Costera por los esfuerzos de ayuda después del huracán Katrina en el Golfo de México. También recibió la Medalla de la Defensa Nacional, la Medalla por Servicios durante la Guerra Global contra el Terrorismo y el Premio al Mérito con 2 estrellas de oro, entre otros importantes reconocimientos.

 

Fernando Expósito:

El oficial de Cumplimiento de Normas y Procedimientos de Doral Fernando Expósito  estuvo activo en el US Marine Corps entre 1996 y 2000. Asignado a Okinawa, Japón y a Pusan, Corea del Sur. Expósito pasó 6 meses a bordo del USS Wasp patrullando el Mar Mediterráneo y realizando operaciones en el Mar Negro, Israel, Turquía, Grecia, Francia, Italia, España y Portugal.

Fue reconocido con la Medalla Nacional del Servicio de Defensa; las Medallas al Logro de la Marina y del Marine Corps y varios reconocimientos adicionales.

Actualmente el Sr. Expósito sirve en la Reserva del Ejército de Estados Unidos y pertenece al 482th batallón de Asuntos Civiles. Ha capacitado a los soldados para el despliegue de combate a Afganistán y asistió a la Escuela de Paracaidismo del Ejército en Georgia donde fue galardonado con la insignia de paracaidista del ejército.

Ricardo Alarcón:

Aún continúa activo en la Reserva del Ejército desde 2010. Actualmente se desempeña como Oficial de Normas y Procedimientos en la Ciudad de Doral. Es el ganador de las competencias Best Warrior como miembro de al 758va Compañía y del 841vo Batallón de Ingenieros y se graduó del Curso de Liderazgo Warrior  el pasado mes de Junio en la Lista del Comandante.

 

Gracias a todos los hombres y mujeres que han servido en las Fuerzas Armadas, nosotros los ciudadanos podemos vivir libres y en paz en suelo Americano. La Libertad no se obtiene gratuitamente y ha habido muchos que nunca volvieron de sus misiones, pero para aquellos que si regresaron después de haber servido con mística, honor y dedicación, el Día de los Veteranos es el día en que todos les debemos mostrar agradecimiento por haber hecho un buen trabajo.

Cuando se encuentre a alguno de estos héroes que están entre nosotros, protegiendo el bienestar de la Ciudad, por favor recuerde decirles: “¡Gracias por sus servicios!”
