Key Club at RRDSH receives sponsorship by Kiwanis International.

The Key Club at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School (RRDSH) will be sponsored by the Biscayne Bay Chapter of Kiwanis International.
The announcement was made by Nellie Hernandez, President-Elect of the Kiwanis Club of Biscayne Bay, who is spearheading the RRDSH Key Club charter creation process, along with Ms. Ashley Castellanos, Activities Director and Ms. Marysu Correa, sponsor teacher at RRDSH. They will provide mentorship, support and much needed funds for the operation of this student organization, focused on developing service projects to benefit children in the community.
Established in 1915, the Kiwanis International Organization is an entirely volunteer-run movement that exists in more than 80 nations, and every year its members devote more than 18.5 million hours to complete nearly 150,000 service projects.
The Kiwanis Club of Biscayne Bay has been in operation since 1950 and count with a very active membership. “What appealed to me about the organization is that it is completely volunteer and the fact that as a Kiwanis member not only you get to participate on the opportunities already stablished as part of the group, but you can bring new opportunities to the table to create volunteer projects for the club”, explained Hernandez.
Aligned with the motto of the Kiwanis International “Serving the children of the world”, the Biscayne organization does “a tremendous amount of hands on work with children” said Hernandez. As they are neighbors with less privileged areas of the County, they find many needs they can cover, especially to help children in shelters. “We have a partnership with a center that helps underprivileged families, and we give backpacks to children before school begins, with uniforms, undergarments, socks and school supplies.”
“Although there are many Kiwanis groups in Florida and Miami, we are aware there is no group in Doral and as we have established presence in RRDSH with the Key Club we think as Doral being a developing community there is the need and the desire to have the Kiwanis brought in Doral.”
There was an attempt to create a Kiwanis in Doral in 2004 and the group was in operation until 2006 when it went inactive. Several other Kiwanis organizations have helped the creation of clubs in Doral Academy High School and Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center, however there was not presence at RRDSH and there is where Kiwanis-Biscayne steps up to help create the club and support its operation.
The organization at RRDSH is called the Key Club, and will be a chapter of the branch of the Kiwanis International movement that works with High School level students to benefit their communities, through volunteer projects.
At primary school levels Kiwanis sponsors the K-Kids clubs; Builders Clubs are for middle schoolers, Key Clubs for teens, CKI for college students and Aktion Clubs for adults with disabilities. It allows all people to find the chance to use their talents and have a great service impact on their communities through volunteer work.
“The advantage of the Kiwanis Club is that the activities are depending on what the community needs and desires are. Most Kiwanis activities are geared towards helping children, but it depends on what the community desires. We are helping create a group that would be in a position to be able to do whatever is necessary for their community.”
To start operating as an official chapter of the Kiwanis International, the Key Club at RRDSH with the guidance of Nellie Hernandez has filed the documentation needed to the main office of the Kiwanis group, and the Biscayne chapter has secured the funds to provide for the operation of the club at RRDSH.
Hernandez said that they expect to have all documentation ready by February to begin working with the group of students who have, since the beginning of the school year, started organizing the Key Club at RRDSH. “We have enthusiastic teenagers eager to get working and we have to get this started as soon as possible.”
“I would hope that the community sees what a tremendous opportunity it is to do good deeds. Our motto is helping children, one child at a time. I hope we can connect with many people that see this tremendous opportunity to help children, all the community but children in particular” concluded Hernandez.

El Key Club de la Secundaria Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School (RRDSH) será patrocinado por el Capítulo de Biscayne Bay del Kiwanis International.
El anuncio fue realizado por la Sra. Nellie Hernández, Presidente Entrante del Kiwanis Club de Biscayne Bay, quien está liderando la incorporación del RRDSH Key Club, junto con la directora de actividades de RRDSH la Sra. Ashley Castellanos y la Sra. Marysu Correa, profesora asesora del Key Club.
El patrocinio consistirá en proveer asesoramiento, adiestramiento y apoyo financiero para el funcionamiento de esta organización estudiantil, cuyo foco principal es el desarrollo de proyectos de servicio que beneficien a los niños de la comunidad.
La organización internacional Kiwanis fue creada en 1915. Es un movimiento completamente voluntario, que opera a nivel mundial en más de 80 países. Sus miembros suman más de 18.5 millones de horas voluntarias anualmente, completando cerca de 150,000 proyectos de servicio comunitario.
El Capítulo de Biscayne ha estado en operación desde 1950. Tiene un grupo de miembros sumamente activo. “Lo que me atrajo a la organización fue su naturaleza completamente voluntaria, y además que como miembro de Kiwanis no solo participas en las oportunidades ya establecidas en el grupo, sino también puedes aportar nuevas ideas para crear proyectos de trabajo voluntario que sean realizados por el club” explicó Hernández.
Muchas de las actividades del club de Biscayne se orientan a ayudar los niños en zonas aledañas menos privilegiadas, como Allapatah o Little Haití, pues las actividades de cada club Kiwanis siempre se circunscriben a beneficiar a la comunidad más cercana geográficamente. El enfoque principal busca beneficiar a los niños, pues el lema de la organización es “Servir a los niños del mundo.”
“Aun cuando existen muchos grupos Kiwanis en Miami, sabemos que no existe un grupo en Doral. Pensamos que al establecerse presencia en RRDSH con el Key Club, al ser Doral una comunidad en desarrollo, aparecerá la necesidad y deseo de crear un Kiwanis en Doral.”
En 2004 hubo un intento de crear la organización en Doral, pero ese grupo está inactivo desde 2006. Otros grupos Kiwanis han ayudado a crear clubs en Doral Academy High School y en Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center. Sin embargo, no había presencia Kiwanis en RRDSH y es allí donde el apoyo de Kiwanis-Biscayne ha sido clave para la creación y operación del Key Club en esa escuela.
Se llaman Key Clubs a las organizaciones que forman parte de Kiwanis International y están compuestas por estudiantes de secundaria. Estas organizaciones benefician a sus comunidades cercanas a través de proyectos de trabajo voluntario.
Los clubs Kiwanis para escuela primarias se llaman K-Kids. En escuelas intermedias son los Builders Clubs; Key Clubs en secundaria, CKI en las universidades y Aktion Clubs para adultos con discapacidades. De ese modo toda persona en una comunidad que desee utilizar de manera voluntaria sus talentos para impactar de manera positiva su entorno, puede encontrar una organización que le apoye en su proyecto.
“La ventaja del Kiwanis Club es que sus actividades dependen de las necesidades y deseos de la comunidad. La mayoría de las actividades se enfocan en apoyo a la infancia, pero siempre en función de las necesidades de la comunidad. Apoyando al Key Club en RRDSH estamos ayudando a crear un grupo que estará en posición de ayudar en cualquier necesidad que exista en su comunidad.”
Para iniciar la operación como un Capitulo Oficial de Kiwanis International, el Key Club en RRDSH ha enviado ya la documentación necesaria a las oficinas principales de Kiwanis, todo con la ayuda y guía de la Sra. Hernández. Adicionalmente, el Capítulo de Biscayne ha asegurado los fondos que aportará para apoyar la operación del club en RRDSH.
Se espera que toda la documentación esté completada en Febrero, para comenzar a trabajar con el grupo de estudiantes que se ha organizado desde principios del año escolar como miembros del Key Club de RRDSH. “Tenemos un grupo de adolescentes entusiasmados, deseosos de trabajar y arrancar este proyecto lo antes posible.”
“Deseo que la comunidad pueda ver la gran oportunidad que representa el poder hacer el bien a los demás. Nuestro lema es ‘Ayudar a los niños, un niño a la vez’. Espero que haya muchas personas interesadas en esta oportunidad de ayudar a los niños; a toda la comunidad, pero a los niños en particular” concluyó Hernández.
