An extensive experience of more than twenty five years in communications, marketing, public relations and culture made Manuel Pila the ideal candidate to join the City of Doral staff as the new Economic Developer, a position that had been vacant for the past two years. He comes from serving for seven years as Marketing Director and Program Manager for the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) in the City of Hollywood, Florida.

“Doral is a very different community. The City of Hollywood is an older community, established in the 1920’s and with the infrastructure that an old community has. Doral is a new community that has experienced remarkable growth and economic success in a very short period of time. It is really an amazing city and to me is a great American Success Story.”

Pila is really excited for being able to be part of that boom and looks forward to working closely with the Public Affairs department and the Zimmerman Advertising Agency on the process of creating a consistent brand for the City of Doral that will market and promote the city. With the input of all directors, the Mayor and the Council, Pila expects to use all possible outlets to get the message across about “Doral being a great success story and everything that it has to offer.”

“The remarkable efforts and the tremendous sense of optimism” he has felt from the administration, the Council, the business community and the residents of Doral “who are working hard to create their own success story” are what attracted him the most for accepting the challenges, expectations and commitments that come along with the position of Economic Developer.

“When you have that much positive energy in one place, it really creates a space where people feel like anything can happen; that they can make their dreams come true and I think Doral is a place where people believe that.”

New people, more options and new industries

He is familiar with the changes that Doral has experienced since incorporation. Born and raised in Miami, from Cuban parents, Pila has had the chance of seeing Doral grow from a small suburb to a vibrant city in expansion. “There are things happening that have really improved the quality of life, and I come in on a situation when I can help to push things along and promote them. I am really excited for the Doral Downtown area, and all developments that are happening on the eastern part of Doral that are going to change the city in a very positive way over the next three years.”

Far from scaring away older residents, used to seeing Doral as a peaceful quiet suburb, Pila considers that the growth and development that will continue to happen in the city in the upcoming years will “attract some new people who enjoy that type of urban lifestyle, living within walking distance of restaurants and shopping, but also I think that people who are already residents of Doral will have more reasons to stay, especially at night and on weekends, they will have more choices instead of going somewhere else. What this will do is to add something to an already very diverse and vibrant city that will be able to bring in new people, give new options to people already there and bring in new industries.”

Besides the industries already with strong presence in Doral such as trade, logistics, hospitality and healthcare, Pila considers there will be growth on the areas of Information Technology, tourism and “definitely the creative class, creative design type of industry that includes movies, videos, TV shows, architecture and fashion. People on those fields tend to like an urban environment, to live near where they work and the Downtown will have opportunities for people who live in the area to ride a bike or walk to almost everything they do. It is going to be family friendly. There are going to be concerts, and cultural events, very attractive to families and residents, who will be able to come see artists that up until now they would have to go outside the city to see.”

“I know the Parks Department has received a grant to put on free concerts in Downtown Doral Park and it is going to be wonderful. That is something I have done quite a bit in Hollywood and It is a very important quality of life issue that also attracts positive media attention, sponsors and make people come to Doral, people with businesses looking for new locations.”

The Office of Economic Development will work closely with the Parks and Recreation Department to lend a hand on the organization of those concerts. “I think they are doing a great job. What I will bring to the table is my background in cultural events and cultural and economic development.” Pila, who is also a musician and talented drummer, is the leader of the famous Miami band ‘The Baboons’ that recently celebrated their 20th anniversary.

“I know many people, many artists. I have been in that world for a long time and it can be an excellent chance for people in that community whether it is dance, music, art, theatre to perform. It is going to be a great adventure for me to work with the Parks Department to try to attract great talent to Doral. All those things would only improve quality of life for residents who will be able to experience all those things without leaving their city.”

“Growing in the same direction”

Pila is going to use and try to build upon many of the good work that was done in the Office of Economic Development in the past. “A lot was done but certainly a lot have happened these years. It is important to update everything and evaluate where the city is right now.”

His main focus is going to be to reach out to the multiple business organizations of the city to try to “unify all those organizations so everybody is growing in the same direction. I have started meeting with their leaders. I will reach out to every single one and let them know I want to learn from them, know their priorities and help them reach those priorities together. I have no doubt that everybody works for the best interest of the City of Doral. I don’t have any history with anyone and I am coming in with the best intention to unify everybody.”

Those unifications efforts will also include reaching out to organizations like the Beacon Council, Enterprise Florida, Chambers of Commerce all across South Florida and the Greater Miami Conventions and Visitors Bureau to make sure Doral is “very much in their minds and their plans. The interest that already exist I think will be growing in the coming years when industries that are expanding in Florida. For many of them Doral is the perfect place to be.”

Just in time for the Miss Universe and the PGA

Pila started working in December, right on time to help the City on the many activities related to the Miss Universe Pageant and the PGA Championship. “These are opportunities to reach millions of people and many of them will be hearing about Doral for the first time. Many others will be reinforcing things they already know and heard about Doral and making it more attractive to them.”

In his position he has worked with the administration on the development of performance indicators of the impact of these events in the City. ”After all is said and done, when you are able to look back and explore the amount of media coverage around the world of events like this and put numbers to it, it is going to blow people’s minds. The impact goes beyond how many people will be at the city at that time. The media coverage and exposure around the world is a very big opportunity for the City of Doral. There are cities that would never have an opportunity like these, let alone two within two months of each other. The city is on the right track as far as reaching a very large new audience, and has to make the best of that situation.”

“To help the community reach their goals”

Teamwork is very important for Pila and he has made it a priority to coordinate his work with the City administration and the council to try to “help the community reach their goals. We are also going to be very aggressively looking on grant opportunities. Team building is really important. The City Manager has a great team of people and I am very proud to be part of that and I am absolutely going to take advantage of all the talent and the knowledge and hopefully help create consensus on ways to move forward together.”

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with such a driven and creative group of people at the City to try to bring to fruition the economic growth of Doral and to work in a place that has so much energy and optimism. As we move forward I think there will be challenges but the type that come from success, not from failure. Doral is a really unique and special place and a remarkable success story. A huge amount of my job will be to connect all stakeholders, listen to them, get their priorities and feedback and help build a consensus together and find the best ways to move forward to try to do the things that can help create that better life for their businesses and help take Doral into a very bright future.”
