We’ve all heard the notorious term “bullying”, and we have seen and heard countless videos and discussions about this renowned problem that currently forms part of the lives of many children and adolescents. We can therefore say that we are fully informed and aware of what it is and of all the forms that this intimidation can have. Bullying is not only physical but also mental. Bullying can destroy a person with the use of simple words. A simple comment has the power to hound someone without mercy and destroy his or her integrity.

bullying DORALMoney, time and effort are devoted to analyze bullying in order to stop and prevent it. Maybe adults and caregivers that explore patterns and behaviors, both of the bully and the victim, do not realize that this negative behavior can be learned both at home with the parents, or at school with a teacher’s conduct. It is a fact that students spend more time of their lives with teachers than with parents themselves. A few days ago my colleagues and I commented on experiences with teachers throughout our lives. We have had extraordinary teachers who have taught us how to prepare for life outside that place that had been our home for almost 15 years, and without a doubt they have given us essential tools for our development. However, like everything in life, there are good and bad teachers. We have also had some teachers who “unintentionally” abused their power and made us feel smaller than ants.

Now that we have grown and have more consciousness we can define and put into words certain behavior of some teachers; who scream and use somewhat offensive words and also qualify as bullying.

I moved to the United States 4 years ago, and coming from a Latin country it is only logical that English was not my native language.  Once in a class I was asked to read out loud and logically I felt embarrassed, even though my English level was somewhat high since I had received English lessons in an academy back in my home country, but my accent was there.  The teacher asked me to stop reading because he didn’t understand anything and he told me that if I wanted to live here, in this country, I needed to speak the language well because “we were in America”. I felt very bad; this event left my self-esteem very low.  I decided not to read out loud again for a very long time, not minding my bad grades as long as this intimidation did not happen again.

This was one of the worst moments of my life as a student. The truth is that it’s not just me throughout these short years that I have lived in this country, who has been embarrassed by some teachers.  One of my classmates told me her most recent story, “It was one day in my class and the teacher sent me to cut some papers, he told me to cut squares and I did.   When I went to hand them in, he snatched them from my hand and said that he had not asked for squares but circles instead and that I was incompetent and threw away the papers”.   My friend told me “I felt so small and although I wanted to scream I could only feel my eyes getting watery”.

Bullying is a major problem, and there are many people in the world who don’t realize that this problem can be between adults, between students, or between adults and students.   Maybe those who pay attention do it too much, or simply not enough depending on the case; but a tip for all the students victims of bullying: “Turn a deaf ear to foolish comments”.

Mi profesor me hace bullying!!!
