“Sprout Change”: Doral’s First Community Garden.

Doral is getting ready to develop its first community garden, “Sprout Change” thanks to Vitoria Fonseca’s initiative, a high school student and local member of Girl Scout Troop 552 who is working on her Gold Award Project- the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.
Starting in March, Doral residents will have the opportunity to learn a little bit more about healthy foods, healthy habits and getting involved creating their own fruit and vegetable garden in a green space of Doral Centre on NW 41st Street. All produce and flowers from this garden will be on sale in the Doral Farmer’s Market also at this location.
“Sprout Change” Project couldn’t have come at a better time. As Doral continues growing its infrastructure, economy and entertainment, this community garden will create a perfect balance between an attractive modern city while caring about healthy habits and green efforts in the community. “This project will not only help beautify the city but also will help raise awareness of the serious side effects that pesticides and preservatives may cause, reduce carbon footprint and create opportunity for recreation, exercise, and therapy for the whole community. It will contribute to people feeling proud of being a Doral resident and be more united”, said Vitoria.
This community garden also perfectly fits the City of Doral’s Green Master Plan, objective number 8 which highlights the importance of “bringing back the community agriculture” as a way to serve small populations while fostering awareness and appreciation for the health benefits. The project also coincides with the “Girl Scout’s Forever Green” initiatives that were kicked off during the 100th Anniversary Take Action Project of the Girl Scouts of America last year.
Earning the Gold Award requires a lot of effort. It involves investigating, getting help, creating a plan, taking action and educating and inspiring others. Vitoria has demonstrated an extraordinary leadership skill to do so. She first started by defining how she wanted to help: “I wanted to start a community garden because I feel we need to learn how to eat healthier but not everybody has the opportunity to do so because of limitations of money or space” she said. Then she contacted local well-known people from the community who could support her project such as Mr. Danny Kaskel, owner of Doral Centre and creator of Doral Farmer’s Market and Councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez-Aguilera.
“I liked the idea of growing local produce that could be harvested and sold at the market. But most of all, I decided to support Vitoria because this Girls Scout Gold project resembles what I enjoy doing – real estate development and social entrepreneurship. Vitoria’s project “Sprout Change,” combines both the improvement of underutilized green space and the opportunity for Doral residents to grow their own fruits and vegetables” said Kaskel. He supported the project by providing the infrastructure – the land, utilities, management, and political support for the community garden.
Motivated by Vitoria’s enthusiasm, Danny Kaskel added: “I like when young people think outside of themselves and try to help the greater good. Vitoria has demonstrated superb communication skills and has taught me many things about agriculture and gardening. She researches everything thoroughly and has pushed this garden into a reality with her follow-through and passion.”
Councilwoman Mrs. Bettina Rodriguez-Aguilera, who has been very involved in this project since the beginning, saw a great potential in this idea: “I felt motivated to support the project because I think it’s important to encourage our young people, help them get the knowledge and develop the skills they need to be our future leaders. I also think that Girl Scouts is a great organization that has proven to be an effective and beautiful way to help young girls develop their potential. Finally, I am a stronger believer that eating in a natural way, including more organic products will definitely contribute to a healthy life”.
Councilwoman Rodriguez-Aguilera also highlighted the benefits of “Sprout Change” for the Doral community: “Getting involved in this project, students from our schools will have the opportunity to learn many key lessons. They will understand how private companies and government work together, how joined efforts are beneficial for reaching a common goal and ultimately, the beauty of nature by following the cycle of living from beginning to end. They will see that everything in life requires effort, love and dedication”.
A ground breaking ceremony scheduled on Sunday, February 23 will be the opening for the community to work on the garden with a goal to have the first harvest by the end of the year. “Vitoria has done an extraordinary job contacting local suppliers who will provide seeds, soils, pallets, and tools. Very soon Vitoria, the Farmers’ Market staff and community volunteers will begin to lay out the garden, designating certain rows for specific crops and then the seeds will be planted into the raised garden beds made out of wooden pallets. Four cubic yards of soil will be donated by Galloway Nursery; Home Depot and Ace Hardware” added Kaskel.
Another requirement for a Girl Scout Gold Award is that the project should have a sustainable impact in the future. “Sprout Change” will definitely fulfill that requirement because of the combination of efforts from leaders like Vitoria who will be heading up a team of peers and community volunteers who also have the same goal. The owners of Doral Centre have also made a commitment to maintain the project from Monday to Friday, with an open invitation for community involvement on weekends.
During the course of her project, Vitoria has been known as “The girl of healthier initiatives”. Her appearance in front of the City of Doral Council asking permission for her project, posters encouraging healthy eating and community gardens she hang in several science classes at her high school and several field trips including Whole Foods, Doral Farmers Market, and a Petting Farm with her Girl Scout Troop Sisters are a positive example for young people nowadays.
Alejandra Moreno, an adult Girl Scout Volunteer who is also a proud mom of a Gold Award recipient says “Vitoria’s project is not only a wonderful idea to motivate healthy eating and green practices among her fellow Girl Scouts but is also a great initiative for the City of Doral. Vitoria has demonstrated her strength as a leader to rally multiple organizations, local Government and Doral residents to come together and build a better future for her community”.
“Vitoria is an example of what adults should be. She is very positive, a good listener and open for advice and changes. She is the kind of person that knows how to manage her ideas to put them into action. She never gave any excuses but did everything she had to do on the right track. I think she will have a great future” added Councilwoman Rodriguez-Aguilera.
“Troop 552 is very proud to provide all our support to Vitoria’s Gold Award Project and to see her develop into an amazing young women of courage, confidence and character who will make this world a better place. We will feel honored to welcome the 4th Gold Award recipient of our Troop”- Girl Scout Doral Troop Leaders.
Vitoria Fonseca, an always smiling young girl that moved with her family from Brazil to United Stated about 13 years ago, has demonstrated to this community how leadership skills can create a positive change.

“Germinando el Cambio”: Primer Huerto Comunitario en Doral.

Doral se prepara para la creación de su primer huerto comunitario, “Germinando el Cambio” gracias a la iniciativa de Vitoria Fonseca, una estudiante de secundaria y miembro de las Girl Scout Troop 552 en Doral, quien está trabajando en obtener el logro más alto para niñas en la organización Scout, el galardón “Medalla de Oro”.
Comenzando en marzo, los residentes de Doral tendrán la oportunidad de aprender un poco más sobre alimentos y hábitos saludables al participar en la creación de su propio huerto de hortalizas y frutas. Este huerto estará localizado en un espacio disponible en el Doral Centre del NW 41st Street y los productos y flores de este jardín estarán a la venta en el mercado fresco “Doral Farmers Market” también ubicado en ese lugar.
El proyecto “Germinando el Cambio” no podría haber llegado en mejor momento. Doral continúa creciendo en infraestructura, economía y entretenimiento, y este espacio va a crear un equilibrio perfecto de una ciudad moderna y atractiva, que a la vez se preocupa por hábitos saludables y esfuerzos por conservar las áreas verdes en la ciudad. “Este proyecto no sólo ayudará a embellecer la ciudad, sino también a crear conciencia de los efectos secundarios graves que los pesticidas y conservantes pueden causar, reducir la huella de carbono y crear oportunidades de recreación, ejercicio y terapia para toda la comunidad. Asimismo, contribuirá a que los residentes estén más unidos y se sientan orgullosos de vivir en Doral” dijo Vitoria.
Este huerto comunitario también se adapta perfectamente al Plan Maestro de Conservación de la Ciudad de Doral, cuyo objetivo número 8 resalta la importancia de “devolver la agricultura a la comunidad” como una manera de servir a poblaciones pequeñas, mientras que se fomenta una mayor conciencia y aprecio por sus beneficios en la salud. El proyecto también coincide con las iniciativas “Siempre Verde” de las Girl Scouts las cuales se iniciaron durante la celebración del 100 Aniversario de las Girl Scouts en Estados Unidos el año pasado.
Ganar la “Medalla de Oro” de las Scouts requiere mucho esfuerzo. Implica investigar, buscar ayuda, crear un plan, educar e inspirar a otros. Vitoria ha demostrado una extraordinaria habilidad de liderazgo para hacer todo esto. Ella comenzó definiendo su objetivo: “Quería empezar un huerta comunitario porque siento que debemos aprender a comer más sano, pero no todo el mundo tiene la oportunidad de hacerlo debido a limitaciones de dinero o espacio”. Luego contactó a personas conocidas en la ciudad que podrían apoyar su proyecto como lo es el Sr. Danny Kaskel, propietario del Doral Centre y creador de mercado de Doral Farmers Market y la concejal Bettina Rodríguez-Aguilera.
“Me gustó la idea de cultivar productos locales que podrían ser cosechados y vendidos en el mercado fresco. Pero más que nada, decidí apoyar a Vitoria porque este proyecto se asemeja a lo que me gusta hacer – desarrollar bienes raíces junto a un espíritu empresarial. Aquí se combina la mejora de espacios verdes subutilizados y la oportunidad para los residentes de hacer crecer sus propias frutas y verduras”, dijo Kaskel. Él apoya el proyecto proporcionando infraestructura: tierra, servicios públicos, administración del espacio y apoyo en los trámites con la ciudad.
Motivado por el entusiasmo de Vitoria, Danny Kaskel añadió: “Me gusta cuando los jóvenes piensan fuera de sí mismos y buscan un bien mayor. Vitoria ha demostrado excelentes habilidades de comunicación y me ha enseñado muchas cosas acerca de agricultura y jardinería. Ella investiga todo a fondo y ha hecho que su idea se hiciera realidad con su pasión y compromiso”.
La concejal Bettina Rodríguez-Aguilera, quien ha estado muy involucrada en este proyecto desde el principio, vio un gran potencial en esta idea: “Me sentí motivada para apoyar el proyecto porque creo que es importante alentar a nuestros jóvenes, ayudarles a conseguir los conocimientos y desarrollar las habilidades que necesitan para ser nuestros futuros líderes. También creo que la organización de Girl Scouts ha demostrado ser una manera eficaz y hermosa de ayudar a las chicas jóvenes a desarrollar su potencial. Por último, soy un fuerte creyente que la alimentación saludable, incluyendo productos orgánicos sin duda contribuirá a una vida más sana”.
La concejal Rodríguez-Aguilera también destacó los beneficios del huerto para la comunidad: “Al participar en este proyecto, los estudiantes de nuestras escuelas tendrán la oportunidad de aprender muchas lecciones importantes. Comprenderán cómo las empresas privadas y el gobierno trabajan juntos, cómo los esfuerzos combinados son beneficiosos para alcanzar una meta común y, en última instancia, podrán presenciar la belleza de la naturaleza siguiendo el ciclo de vida de principio a fin. Verán que todo en la vida requiere esfuerzo, amor y dedicación”.
La ceremonia de inauguración pautada para el domingo 23 de febrero será la apertura a la comunidad para trabajar en el huerto, con el objetivo de tener la primera cosecha a finales de año. “Vitoria ha hecho un trabajo extraordinario contactando a proveedores locales que proporcionarán semillas, tierra y herramientas. Paletas de madera así como abono serán donados por Galloway Nursery; Home Depot y Ace Hardware. Muy pronto ella, el personal Farmer Market y voluntarios de la comunidad empezarán a diseñar cómo se realizará la siembra de los diferentes cultivos y con qué materiales”, agregó Kaskel.
Otro requisito para obtener la “Medalla de Oro” es que el proyecto tenga un impacto sostenible en el tiempo. “Germinando el Cambio” definitivamente cumplirá con ese requisito debido a la combinación de los esfuerzos de líderes como Vitoria, que encabezarán un equipo de especialistas y voluntarios de la comunidad que tienen el objetivo de cuidar este espacio. Los propietarios de Doral Centre también se han comprometido a mantenerlo de lunes a viernes, con una invitación abierta a la participación de la comunidad los fines de semana.
Durante el curso de su proyecto, Vitoria se ha ganado el título de “La chica de las iniciativas más saludables”. Su participación en las reuniones del Concejo de la Ciudad de Doral pidiendo permiso para su proyecto, su activismo colgando carteles alentando jardines saludables a lo largo de la ciudad y en las puertas de varias clases de ciencias de su escuela secundaria y la organización de paseos educativos incluyendo Whole Foods, Doral Farmers Market, y una granja de animales con sus hermanas de la tropa de Girl Scouts son un ejemplo positivo para los jóvenes hoy en día.
Alejandra Moreno, voluntaria en las Girl Scouts y madre de una ganadora de “Medalla de Oro” dice: “El proyecto de Vitoria no sólo es una idea maravillosa para motivar la alimentación saludable y las prácticas ecológicas entre sus compañeras Scouts, sino también es una gran iniciativa para la Ciudad de Doral. Vitoria ha demostrado su fuerza como líder para reunir a múltiples organizaciones, el gobierno local y los residentes de Doral a unirse y construir un futuro mejor a su comunidad”.
“Vitoria es un ejemplo de lo que los adultos deberían ser. Ella es muy positiva, sabe escuchar y está abierta a los cambios y consejos. Ella es el tipo de persona que sabe cómo poner sus ideas en acción. Nunca dió ninguna excusa, sino que hizo todo lo que tenía que hacer en el camino correcto. Estoy segura que tendrá un futuro exitoso”, añadió la concejal Rodríguez-Aguilera.

Vitoria Fonseca, una chica joven y siempre sonriente, que se mudó con su familia desde Brasil hace 13 años, ha demostrado cómo las habilidades de liderazgo pueden crear un cambio positivo en esta comunidad. La familia de Doral Family Journal siente orgullosa de ella como residente de nuestra ciudad y la anima a seguir siendo un excelente modelo y fuente de inspiración para otros jóvenes.
