If instead of a community leader he would have been a pitcher…, he would have surely made it to Major League Baseball, overflowing daring curves and fast straights.

This lawyer and politician knew what to say and when to say it in order not to be easily forgotten.

After nearly a decade in office, on Thursday night October 11th, Doral Mayor, Juan Carlos Bermudez offered his last State of the City Address, assuring from the beginning,   “Certainly, without my faith in the Lord I do not think I would have been able to survive these years…”, a phrase that would serve to understand what would happen soon after.

To find justification in his words one would have to assume that the love for the city he helped build, and the personal sacrifices invested in it, have been the fuel that drove him to put aside the detailed annual report and turn the event into a platform to address issues considered urgent, as the election of his successor on November 6 th.

The fact is that the unexpected words rang loud and clear. The man who at the podium had shown his human side to the point of being moved to tears remembering his parents, delivering flowers to his wife Vivian and daughters, declaring his solid Christian faith and thanking many of those present, was now sending a frontal message to the men aspiring to replace him in office.

The message to candidates

His insistence on the ethical behavior of elected officials became the central part of his message. “You have heard me say that my parents taught me character, integrity, honesty … and that my father was at work the same as he was at home … Today we are in a country where some people believe they can act one way at home and another in their business “; which he stressed should not be, and that applies to elected officials.

Bermudez proclaimed, “Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do, and what is right to do”, adding that an elected official cannot ask for special favors, and, “I hope you understand the difference … because it is bad lying to constituents, it is bad when you tell them you did something when you have not, it is bad when you tell them that you’re responsible for something which in fact you voted against.”

To say goodbye, he spared no efforts, words or gestures, sending his message loud and clear. Facing him were the three candidates, Councilmen Luigi Boria and Pete Cabrera, and former School Board Chairman, Frank Bolaños.

“I hope that whoever wins this competition does not reverse our Code of Ethics …, and I really hope … that he remembers to be transparent, and that having character is doing the right thing when nobody is watching you …, having character is not telling yes to the residents when you know that it cannot be done; character is not to imply that  to do business with the city also means they have to do it also with you,  character is not to offer employment  when you know the person is not qualified to work at City Hall, and character is certainly not to be elected to make money … because you cannot have your own business.”

Among the three candidates, the Mayor has publicly  endorsed Bolaños, and according to his letter of support “it is essential” that the achievements obtained during his tenure “are not lost or changed by those seeking elected positions for their own personal interests.”

The reaction of the candidates

Luigi Boria

Luigi Boria is not worried that Bermudez´s endorsement of Bolaños could influence the voters.  Even though he considers “usual that a politician endorses another politician”, he  believes that this “creates agreements between them…, guiding Mr. Bolaños’ decisions based on what Mr. Bermudez would do.”

Boria said he has been a very good friend of the Mayor, but City Government “is not a monarchy where you inherit your throne”, and that this is considered “a lack of respect towards the citizens and residents.”

Frank Bolaños

Bolaños, however, thanked Bermudez´s support, and highlighted, “I have inherited a clean name from my father, and I wish to pass this on to my children and grandchildren. I want them to known that they also inherit a clean name, based on an attitude of honesty and transparency.”

For him the possibilities to improve the city’s prosperity could have awakened unknown ambitions. “Mayor Bermudez’s concern, as well a mine, is that there could be people and special interests that would like to buy this election”, and “Doral is not for sale.”

Bolaños offers to continue Bermudez´s management, so “the citizen can feel calm.”

Pete Cabrera

For Pete Cabrera honesty and transparency “have been accomplished for the last nine years here…, it is the way we have always done things…, I could not see another way to do it”, he added in relation Doral’ public business.

Smiling and downplaying Bermudez´s comments he added “I feel good that I have always acted in a good way …, my way of acting is well known.”

Cabrera, a robust man that radiates optimism, has been a Councilman since the beginning of Doral for over nine years, and he was vice-Mayor the first five years.

Whoever wishes to dissipate any doubt, the candidate emphasized “I am the only one that has the same experience that Mayor Bermudez has.”

“It is a warning”, Bermudez confirmed

After been asked from DFJ about the purpose of his words towards the candidates, without blinking Bermudez affirmed “it is a warning”. A message surely no one will forget, because this pitcher has only sent amazing curves and fast straights.

The event counted with a delegation from the Southern Command for the presentation of the Colors. The Master of Ceremony was the journalist from the local NBC station, Willard Shepard. The words of blessing were performed by Father Israel Mago, the pastor from Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish.
