On the corner of 58th street and 97th Ave, is suite 145, a space with a large window where we find The Art Shack, an art workshop that occupies a comfortable area, unpretentious from the outside and to the naked eye, it is impossible to imagine all the incredible things that take place inside. The Art Shack was founded by two artists and residents of Doral, Laura Tobi and Paula Vasquez, who felt the need to create a space where children and adults could enter leaving behind their worries to freely express themselves and develop their creative process. The Art Shack is not a traditional art academy, it is a space where through art, students have the opportunity to discover themselves in order to better adapt to the environment that surrounds them.

The Founders

Paula Vasquez

Laura Tobi comes from Argentina and has lived in our city for over 12 years. She has a background in education and worked in educational technology. She decided to leave corporate world to focus on her real passion: the power of expression through art.  “I feel happy because I combine two things I am passionate about: education and creativity,” explains Laura.  She worked with children in a mobile art workshop with which she toured all of Miami. It was then when she met Paula Vasquez, her student who also came from Argentina. Paula studied communication and advertising in her home country and worked in these areas both in Argentina and here in the US where she has resided for over 14 years. Paula was always interested in photography and yoga; and together with her children, she began to take sculpture classes with Laura.  “To work making sculptures fascinated me”, explains Paula.  “I decided to dedicate myself to this, and through my children got extremely involved in their schools; that was when I realized that working with children and art filled me.”  Both Laura and Paula made an immediate connection because they saw the need for a space where people could freely express themselves.

The Approach

Tobi and Vásquez opened The Art Shack a year and a half ago with the purpose to nurture the creative process of each student. “Our main objective and focus of work is this creative process.  The technique is important, but if the technique is given before allowing a person to create or develop an idea, their creativity can be inhibited,” explains Laura. They offer classes for children of all ages and even for adults.

Starting at 2 years old, children can work their sensory aspect and focus on their awareness in the exploration of the environment. “The little ones are not focused in the final product but in the process; they don’t really care what their work looks like, what matters to them is what they do and how they are discovering the world, that is new to them.” explains Tobi.  “The more awareness they have, the greater their capacity to adapt to their surroundings.  Art generates more attentive beings, more conscious of what happens around them.”

Today children are invaded by media and school responsibilities. The school system tends to standardize children, and evaluations such as FCAT and SAT position the child in comparison with his or her peers.

The idea is that through these art classes students are pulled slightly out of that school structure. Vasquez explains, “The kids here choose what they want to do. It is not easy to take them out of their structure, they are stressed. We must work their freedom, their ability to choose.”  The Art Shack offers students a vital component to search for balance in their lives, the opportunity to be able to create and express themselves individually with their personal interests; from painting freely, to disarming computers, cell phones, etc. , and using these instruments to create something new.  “We make our classes customized to the child and not the child to the classes”, explains Laura. “We work with open slogans, ideas or questions from where we start, and that creates as many aesthetic resolutions as capabilities and children, or adults,  are in the class”.

Both Laura and Paula felt that in our community there was no place where students could express themselves freely without following a technique preset by a professor.  “One does not ask the child to write like Shakespeare or Cervantes, one asks the child to write, and to tell their stories of what happens in their family or community.  It is the same with art, art is a way of expression, the child learns to express the richness of what there is around him or her. Our kids mix language and drawing constantly only that up until now the offer was very focused on the technique, so it was the same work designed repeatedly by the teacher.”

Programs

Laura Tobi

There are currently 150 students and the classes are of mixed age. Both Tobi as Vasquez believe that when the children of different age range work together there is better behavior and more stimulation. The atmosphere of the workshop is open, the materials on the shelves are available to all. “When kids learn their routine they look for what they need by themselves. There is an initial proposal but if they want to make a change or add something, the materials are available, since they do not belong to the teacher but to the children.” The groups are not big because in order to work the individuality of each child it is not possible if there are many students.

Additionally The Art Shack provides students guidance to present their portfolio to enter an art magnet school.  “We can say with pride that 100% of students who have come to us have entered the various art magnet schools,” says Vasquez.  “We help the child assemble his or her portfolio, in order to use their art in a creative way and also emphasize that the jobs, that are personal, are submitted to the school in order to express what they like or what bothers them, this makes the difference”.

Other very popular classes are “cartoon”, where students create their own characters that transmit their own actions. They also offer classes in photography, summer camps, workshops for teacher planning days and even birthday celebrations.

Art Shack Attack!

Art Shack Attack! is a program created by Tobi and Vasquez that helps the stimulation and understanding of art. In this program, organized visits to various institutions that deal with art take place.  In Miami there is a lot of art and it is important to create awareness to support and appreciate it.  A museum that they are working closely with is the Frost Art Museum, where there are samples of international level and it is located close to Doral. These visits to the museums are guided and there is a special treatment.  They are interactive because the children  can make drawings, paste brochures, take pictures, touch the works if allowed, etc. It generates a link to the institution, it is not a cold visit. These visits are open to the public.

Final Words

“Doral is our community, we have lived here for several years,” say Laura and Paula. There are various art workshops in our city and we believe it is important for each institution to have its own proposal.  Laura writes, “This city has devoted many resources to sports and although there are some resources committed to culture through the Cultural Affair Advisory Board it would be important that the city get more involved with art.  Tobi recommends, “We should not saturate children with extracurricular activities: one form of art, one physical activity and time to play.  Kids learns by playing and art is a way of playing, because when making art children go through the same stages that they go through when playing . They need this for their psychosocial development.  We are convinced that our proposal helps people and that we can help make up for what is happening in education, it is therapeutic, it is the self-esteem of creativity.  We have to think outside of the structures of standardization.  Kids are not allowed to think differently and although it can be a bit scary to permit some freedom, it is necessary for the healthy development of any individual.”  Paula adds, “It is a rewarding job, through dialog with the kids and adults we learn a lot, it is fascinating! There is teamwork, each one brings their own individuality and in here reach a sense of belonging.”
