Women entrepreneurs: A balancing act.

Women entrepreneurs are in fashion. Not in vain the ‘I can be Barbie’ for 2014 is going to be “Entrepreneur Barbie”.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines an Entrepreneur as “One who organizes, manages and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise” and Enterprise as “A project or activity that involves many people and that is often difficult”.
With that vision, one can say that women have been entrepreneurs since prehistoric times, because living with a partner has always been an ‘enterprise’, and being pregnant and giving birth are among the riskiest ‘enterprises’ women might undertake throughout their lifetimes. Add to the mix either: pursuing an education; developing a career; participating in community activism or political involvement; public health hazards; religious persecution or social and cultural limitations, and one can conclude that just the fact of being born a girl entitles her with the potential title of “Woman Entrepreneur”.
Women in Doral are around 52% of the population of the city, according to the 2010 census. They constitute the heart and soul of the community. Doral women are very active and involved everywhere, starting with the City Council, with a majority of women.
Saturday March 8th will mark the celebration of International Women’s Day, and the theme selected by the United Nations 2014 is “Inspiring Change” to “encourage advocacy for women’s advancement, challenging the status quo for women’s equality and vigilance inspiring positive change”1.
Aligned with the objective of inspiring positive change, and to honor all the girls and women that live, learn, work and play in this city we all call home on International Women’s Day, Doral Family Journal offers an analysis of the main challenges ‘Women Entrepreneurs’ face in Doral.
Learn the language for business
Almost 90% of the population of Doral is composed of immigrants and many of them do not speak English. The challenge for women becomes harder when they are the main providers of their households and need to find a good paying job; when they have to navigate the education system to ensure the best programs or alternatives for their children, or when they decide to launch a business on their own.
Although there is not an official language in the US, there is a legislation that establishes English as the official language in Florida. Even though many people in the Miami-Dade area speak Spanish, becoming proficient in the English language is fundamental to interact with authorities and government agencies and to conduct business seriously in this country.
Therefore, if there is a single piece of advice I would venture to give to help you adapt, actively participate in the community and embrace the American way of life quickly, it would be that your first goal is set on learning English, moreover if you want to become a successful entrepreneur and a valuable asset for this city and this country.
Paraphrasing Napoleon Hill, remember that a woman who can speak two languages is worth two women. That can be pretty useful in a society where fulfilling different roles is an appreciated value.
The balancing act of performing different roles
Women naturally handle many tasks at the same time. Being a wife, mother, daughter, friend, housekeeper, community activist, business owner or employee and executing all roles successfully is a balancing act. There is not one woman that would say it is easy.
When there is a task that becomes overwhelming or complicated, speaking up to family members or friends, or finding a support group that shares the same interests, activities or issues is the best way to create a network to successfully balance all the different roles a woman has in her life.
In Doral, women are very active and organized towards the fulfillment of their objectives. There are support groups through religious or sport organizations, the PTSAs at the schools, city sponsored activities and committees and many other groups that are breeding ground for lasting friendships and in many occasion even business ventures.
This approach is particularly important when a woman decides to become an entrepreneur. Networking through attending events or even joining a local business organization will provide the support, training and opportunities to make any entrepreneurial activity a success.
Finding time to being just ‘You’
It is a common complaint among women that they come in the last place on their own lists of priorities. That is a big mistake, because someone who does not feel that has fulfilled her own needs hardly will complete her tasks happily or provide a nurturing environment for those under her care.
The idea is not becoming selfish or doing only pleasant activities in lieu of completing assignments or assuming responsibilities. It consists on reserving every day a special time in the schedule for doing something that makes you feel accomplished, pampered and with a sense of purpose. That will give you a happy boost to withstand anything the day can bring. Put it in the agenda and stick to it!
Doral is a city with plenty of parks and open spaces suited for those that prefer to unwind in contact with nature. There are also many locations and businesses that provide the most diverse activities for people to develop their different talents. Whether it is walking in the park for 30 minutes, painting with watercolors, attending a yoga class, singing in a band or reading in the library, finding time every day to being just ‘You’ will bring countless benefits to your life.
The most successful women entrepreneurs are those that embrace changes, take the time to put their days in perspective and get ready to face with enthusiasm any challenge that may come along the way. Join the movement. After all, the theme of 2014 for International Women’s Day is ‘Inspiring Change’.

Mujeres emprendedoras: Buscando el equilibrio

Las mujeres emprendedoras están de moda. No en vano la Barbie del 2014 es la ‘Barbie Empresaria’
El diccionario Merriam -Webster define a un ‘Emprendedor’ como “quien organiza, administra y asume los riesgos de un negocio o empresa ” y una ‘Empresa’ como ” un proyecto o actividad que involucra a muchas personas y que a menudo es difícil.”
Con esa visión, las mujeres han sido ‘emprendedoras’ y ‘empresarias’ desde la prehistoria, pues la vida en pareja siempre ha sido una ‘empresa’, y estar embarazada y dar a luz son algunos de los proyectos más riesgosos que una mujer podría emprender durante toda su vida. Añada a la mezcla educarse, desarrollar una profesión, participar en actividades comunitarias o políticas, además de los riesgos de salud pública, la persecución religiosa o las limitaciones sociales y culturales, y se puede concluir que por el sólo hecho de haber nacido, una niña tiene potencialmente el título de “mujer emprendedora”.
Las mujeres en Doral suman alrededor del 52 % de la población según el censo del 2010 y constituyen el corazón y el alma de la comunidad. Las mujeres de Doral están en todas partes, empezando por el Ayuntamiento, donde todas las Concejales son mujeres.
El Sábado 8 de marzo marcará la celebración del Día Internacional de la Mujer, y el tema seleccionado por la ONU para el 2014 es “Inspirar el cambio” para “animar la defensa del progreso de las mujeres en el mundo, desafiando el ‘status quo’ de la desigualdad e inspirando un cambio positivo” 1 .
Alineado con el objetivo de inspirar un cambio positivo , y para honrar a todas las niñas y mujeres que viven, aprenden , trabajan y juegan en esta ciudad que en el Día Internacional de la Mujer , Doral Family Journal ofrece un análisis de los principales retos que enfrentan las mujeres para convertirse en “Mujeres Emprendedoras” en Doral.
Aprenda el idioma de los negocios
Casi el 90% de la población de Doral está compuesta por inmigrantes, muchos de los cuales no hablan inglés. El reto para las mujeres resulta aún mayor cuando proveen el principal ingreso de sus hogares y necesitan encontrar un buen empleo; cuando tienen que navegar el sistema educativo para asegurar las mejores alternativas para sus hijos o cuando deciden iniciar un negocio independiente.
Aun cuando los EEUU no tienen un idioma oficial, el Estado de Florida si tiene una legislación que establece el inglés como idioma oficial del estado. Independientemente que en el área de Miami muchas personas hablen español, el dominio del inglés es fundamental para interactuar con autoridades, agencias del gobierno y para ser tomado en serio en los negocios en este país
Por lo tanto, nos atreveríamos a aconsejar, para adaptarse lo más pronto posible al estilo de vida americano y participar activamente en su comunidad, que decida convertir el aprendizaje del idioma inglés en su primer gran objetivo. Una vez que lo logre, se le abrirán muchas puertas y se convertirá en un elemento mucho más valioso para su ciudad.
Parafraseando a Napoleón Hill, una mujer que habla dos idiomas vale por dos. Esto es muy valioso para una sociedad donde la capacidad de acometer diferentes roles al mismo tiempo es muy importante.
Cumplir con varios roles: un acto de equilibrio
Es natural en las mujeres la capacidad de acometer muchas tareas al mismo tiempo. Ser esposas, madres, hijas, amigas, sirvientas, activistas, empresarias, empleadas y cumplir todos los roles exitosamente es definitivamente un acto de equilibrio. Ninguna mujer dice que es fácil.
Cuando las tareas se tornan complicadas, la comunicación con los miembros de su familia o sus amistades, o encontrar un grupo de apoyo que comparta sus intereses, actividades o dificultades, son la mejor manera para que una mujer pueda crear una red de apoyo y balancear los diferentes roles en su vida.
En Doral las mujeres son muy activas y organizadas para la consecución de sus objetivos. Existen grupos de apoyo tanto religiosos como deportivos; las asociaciones de Padres en las escuelas; eventos y comités auspiciados por la municipalidad y muchos otros grupos que se convierten en semillero para grandes amistades y en muchas ocasiones oportunidades de negocio.
Este enfoque es particularmente importante cuando las mujeres deciden convertirse en empresarias. Al asistir a eventos de emprendedores o unirse a las organizaciones locales de apoyo a los negocios, pueden encontrar la orientación, entrenamiento y oportunidades que les ayudarán a alcanzar el éxito.
La importancia de reservar tiempo personal
Una queja habitual entre las mujeres es que ocupan el último lugar en sus propias listas de prioridades. Eso es un grave error, porque alguien que no se siente que ha cubierto todas sus necesidades, difícilmente podrá realizar sus tareas con alegría o proveer un ambiente adecuado y enriquecedor para aquellos a su cargo.
No es cuestión de ser egoísta o enfocarse en actividades placenteras sin asumir responsabilidades, sino de fijar cada día un rato especial dentro del horario para realizar alguna actividad que le permita sentirse satisfecha, realizada y con propósito. Esto le va a dar un empuje positivo para enfrentar cualquier reto que pueda aparecer en el día. La clave está en reservar el tiempo en la agenda y ser firme en cumplirlo.
Doral es una ciudad con muchos parques y espacios abiertos, ideales para quienes prefieren distraerse en contacto con la naturaleza. También hay muchos negocios que proveen las actividades más diversas para que los residentes desarrollen sus talentos. Tanto si es una caminata por el parque, como pintar acuarelas, cantar en una banda, hacer yoga o leer en la biblioteca, reservar un tiempo personal traerá incontables beneficios para su vida.
Las mujeres empresarias más exitosas son siempre aquellas que fluyen con los cambios, se toman el tiempo de poner su día en perspectiva y están siempre listas y entusiasmadas para enfrentar los retos que se les presenten. En homenaje a ellas, el tema del Día Internacional de la Mujer para el 2014 es “Inspirar el Cambio”.
